There were so many excellent submissions, I'm thoroughly impressed by the quality of the songs and the talent of their respective composers--great job everyone!

Here are the entries, along with a few words from their authors about themselves and their compositions:

Very Cherry

My name is Herbert J. Binder, born in 1961 in Vienna, Austria but I'm living now for about 15 years in Switzerland working in the audiology field. I'm playing various instruments and I'm doing sequencing for more than 20 years mostly on a noncommercial basis.

The little piece was arranged in Ableton Live 8, using the CoreBass Cherry libraries, particularly fingered and slapped, processed in Guitar Rig 3. By understandable reasons, the EQing is a little bassy. The other instruments are mostly from the Kontakt 3 library and from Ableton Suite 8.

Cherry Choke

I'm Peter Andersson from Stockholm, Sweden, and I call my
one-man-hobby-band "For Pete's Sake". I do mainly pop/rock songs with a
progressive touch. I'm originally a drummer, but try my best to also

The included song was never actually intended to be a song, originally just a fun groove with bass, drums, and keys to practice/jam guitar over. Because of the competition I decided to add some more tracks and enter it.

Uluru
(CoreBass Pear)
In my next life I may be a real musician. Until then I will continue to dabble in music when time permits, in a completely amateur (stab in the dark) fashion.

This short piece of music was inspired by a visit to the big red rock Uluru. It is a very beautiful, peaceful, and spiritual place, and this composition was meant to reflect that.

It really needs quite a bit more work, but meantime is a bit of a sketch highlighting the Pear bass. The sax is Chris Hein solo horns. Great seeing so many talented people (real musicians) involved in this competition. And of course--three cheers for Greg.

Up and Running

I have been a musician since my teens (a few decades ago). Been in a few garage bands early on but have most of my live playing experience in church praise and worship teams. Got into home recording a few years ago. I was recording everything direct to audio (no midi) until just a few months ago when I dove into midi, samplers, Kontakt, sample libraries, and have really been enjoying discovering the freedom and variety of sound that samplers provide.

I'm from Chicago, so, of course, I wish we could vote twice (in case you're not familiar, the motto here is: "vote early and vote often)!

A small number, but very high quality group of entries with a diverse range of genres. But one thing in common, good playing. Kudos to everyone who entered.

I'm digging the drum groove and sounds on Retrojam. It's kinda Allman Brothers-ish, in a very cool way. What was the drum sample library used on that one -- the mix reminds me of vintage Clapton drum sounds (e.g., Lay Down Sally, etc.)? I really like it. I'd also like to know the percussion used on "Up and Running" -- it sounds so authentic I'm guessing it was either real percussion played live or a loop. If not, I want to know the library.

"piece for pear" takes the vote from me.. it was a touch choice between that and "koreana express", 2 great tracks!

Tough choice between Cherry Choke (killer bass tone, awesome, authentic articulation work) and Koreana Express for me here.

Went back and forth between these two to finally decide on the jazzy feel of the second one.

What a great testimonial, from you on your product!

I also thought the guitars sounded great on that track. I would love it if the composer of "Cherry Choke" could share some guitar strumming insights/tips. I'm also really digging "Piece for Pear." Is that a hang drum I hear in the background? If so, which developer's library (SonicCouture and ToneHammer both have hang drum libraries and both developers seem to make great libraries, so it's a tough call). I'm enjoying a lot of these tracks. "Landscape Sunrise," for example, is such an awesome, beautiful, soulful piece, that really captures the expressive beauty of this bass library. Five years ago, I would have never thought this kind of realism was possible in sampled bass guitar library. Greg, this is exactly why I am such a fan of your work and find you have a serious gift.

By the way Greg, while I dig the anonymity of not showing the names of the composers, why not reveal the composers at some point? I mean, there's not a bad track in the bunch, IMO and I'd really like to learn more about the people behind the tracks (a little bio on each composer would be awesome; maybe at the Orange Tree Site or here?). Again, clearly, the musicianship is really good across the board.

Oh! I thought they were real, too! I was referring to the bass articulations, assuming the guitars had been played live. All the more, kudos to "For Peter's Sake".

Peter Andersson's, "For Pete's Sake," bio/info caught my attention, as I too am a drummer who also plays keys -- plus I am impressed with his track. I checked out Peter's MySpace page and really dug a song of his called "So." Peter, if you catch this -- really, nice work! And yes, that's me singing, and now I do feel very proud!

Thanks also paveloso for the positive feedback on my WBS entry!!

I decided to enter something in this competition, mainly because I find the Orange Tree libraries so inspiring and it was such a great opportunity to play around with them and learn to use them better. I was of course hoping my entry would do well in the competition too, that 1st price being very very tempting...

Honestly though, my main hope with entering was just this - that my demo song would generate some interest, comments and positive feedback. I'm so happy to hear you guys enjoy the demo and it's so cool to know I did manage to show off Greg's excellent libraries in a realistic way!

I don't have any bass- or guitar-playing skills. The scripts in these libraries really help *a lot*! In the demo I mainly played around with effects such as slide and vibrato. The guitar strumming was really just the result of trying things out until it sounded good and realistic.

(I used Ampeg SVX and Amplitube Metal for some sound processing btw).

About the fact that I managed to fool you, Greg, that I had used real guitars. I think I should receive some sort of certificate!

Or maybe you should!?

A certificate for you, for fooling people with a sampled instruments sounds more appealing to me than a certificate to me for being fooled.
