Al Gore is not one of my heroes. But he didn't jump on the wagon late. He was interested in this issue for quite some time before he became VP. And I don't fault him for bringing the topic back to the forefront of conversation, regardless of motive. No one else was giving the topic more than a few minutes on talk radio.

I can't deny the reality of your assessment. To be fair, though, I think at least of some of it started when John Winthrop, a Brit as you know, declared the colonies to be a city on a hill. It just got worse from there. This became manifest destiny, a ludicrous concept that many Americans unknowingly believe ("the greatest country in the world").

It has been my observation that while not all Americans are loud and cocky, those that are certainly stand out when seen wandering about Europe. Without exception, the noisiest group in any restaurant in Europe is always made up of Americans, much to the embarrassment of the rest of us.

It's really a country with some very good qualities, but the downsides are equally unfortunate, I'm sorry to say. A little humbleness would go a long way, IMO. At least we voted in Obama, which I think gives us hope for being part of the world community again.
