All Zebra, only used stereo widening on master out.

Have fun listening :)

Awesome, as usual..... And makes me want to turn in my DAW for a spatula. :( :hihi:
Hey tboulette, maybe a picture can inspire you then :) Its a screenshot of the total setup for that tune in Cubase 4.

When i decided to mix it i realized that the small mid-hi EQ adjustments i had done on various Zebra instances was more or less around the same spot so i returned to the default value for the sounds and made the EQ adjustment on the master instead.

Wow. Thanks for this. Just finished listening to this song. It sounds fantastic, and the production is top notch. I have all the demo sounds from your website, and the newskool set. So thanks for the inspiration.
Cheers,
:) Michael

As always your works are inspiring and excellently composed. I love the dynamic range in your songs too; proof you don't subscribe to the "compress the hell out of everything" school of thought that is so common today.

I especially liked the glass bell-ish sound panned a bit to the mid right. Are all those presets in the commercial banks or are you at the sound design again?

Is there somewhere I can download all your mp3s for my ipod? I'd rather not have to scour the threads for your links. Maybe a page on your blog/website with an "all my music" links?

Cheers!

Ok, I gotta ask. How do you know what track is what when they're all named Zebra2? ;)

Post

Here's a noodle featuring Z2, MK, and EWI.

It's ten minutes long, and may put you to sleep. But, what can I say, I love Robert Rich!

Well the Zebra demos page on www.xsynth.com might do the trick for most parts :) Sounds used for that tune is tweaked 50% oldies and 50% new (which will see the light someday)

Music made with Zebrify

Other than a somewhat percussive motif and a brassy bit at the end, all of the amplitude on all patches is sourced from me singing (some pretty heavy reverb used too). I think this really changes the nature of the sound as it's not envelope-driven, there is movement in the amplitude that either consciously or sub-consciously audible has a different feel that I hope is appreciated (as an interesting technique)

The percussive motif is Zebra + a similar Zebrify patch adding transients whose amplitude is from percussive samples. The brassy bit is a more or less random vocal a cappella track found in Creative Commons, chopped up and resequenced, and run through a Zebrify patch tracking the pitch and amplitude - there are characteristics in this sound in the end that I can't imagine ever getting from envelopes and LFOs etc. I'd imagine a good vocalist could essentially play Zebrify with their voice (I'm not winning American Idol anytime soon, have no real mic etc.)

The second bottom tab labeled 'Input'.

First thing is to get a handle on dialing in good settings for the envelope follower and transient detector, it's not hard but I think it'll always need adjustment depending on what audio is going through Zebrify. Drum loops are good here, try getting VCF1 to modulate with EnvFol1 and Transient in the modulation menu.

Next, I think the channel mixer 'Mix' modules are really important, using the ModMatrix to automate a mixer can turn it into a gate, more or less. The audio being fed into Zebrify can be distrubuted to each column of the Zebrify grid by the Input Mixer. Right-click routing is also a must at times. Try modulating volume controls anywhere in Zebrify with EnvFol / Transient.

To do pitch-tracking of a monophonic, tonal source (like, not drums and not chords), set input to 'input' on the tab w/ the keyboard, MIDI takes sidechain MIDI and I'm not real clear on how In Qtz is different from 'Input'. On the pitch-tracker section of the second tab, there's a box that has "percussive", change that to "voiced" or "clear". I'm not completely clear on everything in this area, but some of it is pretty obvious. While I think pitch-tracking will really shine on not-VA-Synth input, feeding Zebrify a sine wave patch works pretty well for getting a handle on the pitch-tracking.

One should be careful when adding oscillators, FM, combs, noise - they can be pretty loud as they load in active. While Zebrify without these is a pretty interesting effects unit, with these it's a lot more.

thank you!

From the MSEG thread and i picked up an idea which was given a full Zebra treatment.

I made a screenshot of the setup to give you an idea of how this arrangement was made:

and the track is here:

Have fun listening :)
