thank brok landers,
due to my poor english, i've not posted exactly
what i've need, yes your method is OK, but for
advanced multilayer FX like 3D simulation is
very difficult without this option (edge effect).
i've the solution to use my usual tools and template (flash)
to do that but it will be very nice (and quicker) to make
a hole, an "invert mask" into KnobMan like photoshop.
Maybe it's possible ? but i don't know how...

Great tool again!

Post

well, you can do what i've done also with the masking section in knobman,
but there's no "inverse masking" in knobman, where you could load any shape
into the masking and puch out that shape from the one you've loaded as the main primitive ... if you mean that ...

So did you think it was fun or annoying? Also out of curiosity how was your experience with using the app as far as easy of use?

edit. oops they are not in the file. I didn't realize that that might be a probem.

...OK I found them in the recycle bin :D that would have sucked. Uploaded them heres the file http://www.box.net/shared/v3xclcf7sm
Wonderful but they are very advanced and I went through all 34 pages and found at most maybe 3%-5% of everyone's files as the rest are gone. Basically if they were put on the box.net they are pretty much gone. What was maddening is the other sites were just gone or the material was just like the box.

I would never use the box if they can't even keep a file for a week or so.

Anyways thank you for the link and now if we had a real repository (like they have for Reaktor) for these knobs it would be really nice.

well, I deleted everything so that I could establish new link for the compiled files on the my blog. The fact that they are truely gone upon deleting them is good in my eyes, I don't like the idea of things being retained if I have deleted them. I have this problem with the place I use to host my jpegs, I find links to them on search engines even after I've removed them. I guess from now on though I'm just going to say things are on the blog rather then post a link. I do like box because they don't have all the annoying garbage like mediafire and such.

this is odd as box.net is permanent unless you delete your account. I get a note every file that was downloaded, and I have a free account, too.

It was quite fun and easy to work with knobman, but I've noticed some odd things, like when I try to export the knob, I should manually type an extension, otherwise it wouldn't be exported to the right format.
Maybe I should try skinman too, because it's so addictive :D

just messing while im learning...ok, its incredibly oversize, and not amazing..its a concept...

knobs dont suit..they were meant to kinda sit on an old brass looking ring/washer type thing...meant to be a box with a glass.perspex cover...

anyho, took me 20 mins and was fun

Post

Dave, that's sweet - a bit more work and you have a great UI.. It's a good concept!

Yeah, that is a great concept. I wanted to do it last year for something but never got around to it. anyway...

my thoughts,

Size is part the issue and the knobs. Why the knobs? With a photographic background you're going to need photo-realistic knobs and other elements that equally match that level of detail. Size will help you fudge some of that when it smaller.

As far as what you have posted in the current image. Perhaps try to add some inside shadow to the brass rings, set the offset to 0% and the density and diffuse very high. This will spread the darkened area around the perimeter of the shape. Knob shadow will help a great deal as well, however, you will want to exaggerate them to emphasize the sense of depth you need for a clear casing or being significantly raised from the board itself.

I think you should make the board image yourself though. I believe that Skinman will be very capable of doing this. Just build it up and watch the shadowing. This will allow for cohesion between the knobs and the rest of the image. For an example I did this image in PHS based on a Photoshop creative tutorial in about 10-20min or so. Something like this would be easier to add knobs to rather then a photograph.

TBH, trhe knobs were just slapped on, really they need to be more metallic for my liking (im quite imaptient tho and wanted to put up an image that had knobs...)

the 'brass' rings i can do with more effort and study, but i dont think i'd even consider making my own PCB...i'd prob try and make the rest look more 'realistic' than spend the time making a board (tho if it was all a quarter of that size..who knows)

at the moment tho, i making a synth GUi for my next project, and it looks good so far (to me), but i just had the idea for this so quickly pumped it out while it was still fresh

cheers for the tips, i'll keep those and hopefully work them into that concept for another plugin :)
