That sounds excellent

I had been thinking that a resource along the lines of SOS's 'Synth Secrets' series but updated for use with state-of-the art digital synths would be very useful. In fact,I very nearly started a thread on the subject. Looks like this will be all that and more.

...tempted to say that great minds think alike, but that would be doing Urs a terrible disservice.

Yeah... why not get started with the original idea? Maybe upload to box.net or some other site?

It's Monday, so we could have a weeklong contest and judging over the weekend, or even on Friday. We'd probably just need to pick an idea to model/judge the patches after and also pick a time (including time zone) when all submission should be entered by.

It should be fun and I know I would be interested in the learning experience gained from this...

And as for the judging... we could create a poll and leave the patches to be judged by all of KVR or something?

Anyway, just shooting ideas, as I think Hakey has a fun one here.

I think one week would probably be enough, but as it's the first one perhaps two weeks would be better? That gives enough time for plenty of people to see this thread and generate a decent amount of interest.

Tbh, I had been thinking that a bi-weekly or monthly contest would probably suffice - any more frequent and it might just generate 'contest fatigue'? What do other people reckon?

Shouldn't it just be for Zebra users? I was thinking that it would be the .h2p patches being judged here (not Wav or mp3 that someone has recorded using their patch) and so one would necessarily need to be a Zebra user to be able to make a judgement.

My suggestion would be:

1. Decide the theme of the contest. This could be as obviously explicit as 'synth bass', 'strings' or '50's sci fi' etc., or as abstract as something like 'microscopic' or 'time'. (Maybe the first could just be 'show us your best patch'?)

2. Set a deadline for entries.

3. After the deadline all of the entries are uploaded as .h2p files into one online folder (perhaps at box.net).

4. A poll and discussion thread is created (probably here in the U-He sub forum) and users are invited to download the patches and vote for their favourite.

It might also be an idea, at least as long as voting is proceeding, to keep the identities of the patch creators anonymous, so that people are judging solely on the quality of the patches. Afterwards they can reveal their IDs if they so choose.

What does everyone think?

Well I like it... and definitely agree... just for Zebra users (no wave or mp3 files... just patches).

Although I would participate regardless... I had a lot of fun when Fabfilter did their rhodes preset contest, and found that I learned a lot from trying to emulate something specific, especially something as classic as a rhodes.

Anyway, my preference would be that we have something semi-specific to create, but definitely not limited to emulations... again, just thinking here and stating my preference.

I'd even be interested in something like picking a youtube video and then having a contest for creating the best drone or arp patch to accompany it... really anything will do, but again just shooting ideas

Edit.... another idea...

Could even have a contest for best or most creative use of the X/Y pads...

I'm all for this (Just became a zebra owner today!) but I hope it contains resources for the uhbiks, filterscape, and MFM2 as well (I'm a lot more familiar with filterscape and the uhbiks... MFM is the only U-He plug I don't own now)

I suggest looking at the monthly competition in the Music Cafe. It's got a really good set of rules that works quite well. So one would start a thread for submissions and a thread for gossip. When time is due, there's another thread for voting. I'd suggest that only people can vote who take part in the contest.

What do you think?

Well, might it be best to let this thread run a couple of days before deciding on the first 'theme'. That way we can get a fair amount of input from those who are interested...

I'm minded to think that a fairly broad or abstract theme would work best, for the first time around at least - a very specific theme might just alienate users rather than attract them.

The creative XY and the video 'soundtrack' ideas are good ones. I particularly like the video one - maybe a film clip without music - the patch is one to be played on top of it to alter/enhance/contrast-with it?

Anyway, more suggestions please.

Yes, that could work. As you say, defining a workable set of rules before the first contest starts would be a sensible idea

How would one enforce the only-participants-get-to-vote thing?
