Participants are of course easily identified by their post containing the entry. Then there are two ways:

1. Public vote: Every participant can distribute a limited number of points among the other participants by posting his points in a voting thread. But he can of course not vote for himself.

2. Secret vote: One "referee" gets votes PMed from everybody.

I'm all for the public vote though, as seen here:

So one would start a thread for submissions and a thread for gossip. When time is due, there's another thread for voting. I'd suggest that only people can vote who take part in the contest.

What do you think?
+1 that would be the way of doing it, except that everybody should have the oppertunity to vote, also those not being an active part of the contest.

Voters must have had 20 prior posts.

I think that the idea of only allowing those who enter a patch to vote is that it should theoretically encourage more entries - as opposed to spectators.

I would personally be interested in:

Cello-type patches that can make low-end sounds

Metalic FX (Striking or bending metal, etc..)

Aggro-industrial bass arps...

Other stuff?

Do you mean as contest themes - or are these just the kind of patches you'd like to hear?

'Metal' might make a nice theme, but I think that 'Cello' or 'Aggro-industrial bass arps' are so specific they might not have the wide appeal required to get a good number of entries - esp. for a first contest.

That said I already have a reasonable home-rolled Cello patch... :hihi:

I mean I am down with throwing down some shit like that, and I would love to hear other people's takes.

I think specific is better.

Fair enough.

And I'm not averse to 'specific' per se - I just think that the first contest should have some broad appeal to get the punters in. I kind of hope that those of us who are interested in taking part could come to a consensus over the theme - and that's perhaps more likely to be the case if it's a fairly non-specific.

Maybe the first winner could then go on to choose the next theme?

Further down the line (if it gets that far) I'm sure that a 'Cello' contest would certainly make an interesting theme.

I like the idea of a "Score this videoclip with a single patch" competition.

This sounds great.
I'm in.

So it looks like there's enough interest. :)

We just need to decide upon the format and rules.

1. Should the vote be restricted to those who've contributed a patch?

Pro: It might encourage participation

Con: Disregards the wider audience. Perhaps with fewer votes the result becomes less 'meaningful'?

2. Should patch submissions public or anonymous?

As I've already said I personally prefer the idea of anonymous entries.

Pro: It would mean that judgements would be made solely upon the quality of patches free from the influence of forum politics, favouritism, sympathy etc. And it would be fun guessing who made which patch. Maybe some people who wouldn't otherwise take part would do so if they could choose to remain anonymous? All patches would be released simultaneously in a single dl'able folder rather than entries being spread across a submissions thread.

Con: It would require one person to do the admin. - receiving the patches, then re-uploading them and organising the voting thread. (I'd be happy to do this - at least for the first contest. If it didn't work out, for whatever reason, we could try it another way.)

3. Should voting be public or anonymous?

I guess if patch submission were anon. then a public vote seems preferable to me.

Pro: A public vote is more accountable and should stop all but the most shameless from voting for their own patch.

Con: If patch submissions weren't anon. then a public vote again has the potential for Eurovision style political bias and strategic voting to creep in

4. Should voting be just 'vote for the best patch', or 'list all of the patches in order of preference (as in the Music Cafe comps). I prefer the latter - seems more fun to me?

What do people think about the above?

Any other considerations?

Post

Another question - how about the winner gets to set the 'theme' for the next comp.?

Pro: It's almost something like a prize, maybe?

Con: This might just tempt the winner to set themselves up with an advantage in the next comp - 'hmm...I've got a nice Swanee Whistle/Kazoo patch, so the theme shall be Swanee Kazoo.'

Post

1) No

2) i like that idea!!

3) makes no difference to me

4) same as 3

in addition i think a simple mp3 demo should be submitted with each path to encourage voting (single held keys with modulation, not fancy show off Old School style demos :hihi: ) or there could be stranded midi file/s that have to be used

:)

Post

why not make it theme-less?

Post

How about 'Swanee Kazoo' for the first theme?

I don't know. I think that for a regular competition there needs to be some kind of theme; as a spur to inspiration, as some kind of benchmark by which to measure the patches (for a 'Cello' themed comp. a patch should probably have some degree of 'celloness' about it) and to get people trying things that they other wise might not attempt and hopefully provoke discussion about strategies for getting a particular sound.

That said, I did say near the beginning of the thread that maybe the first comp. could just be 'share your best unpublished patch'.
