i think "Animation" should be the theme,
patches that are non static, (make use of mod controllers)

This is just one note. You probably recognize it unless you're like young and stuff. It was used on countless songs in the 80ies.

Thanks. Yes, I'd already kind of guessed what the sound was. What's the famous chillout/faux classical track that uses that?jupiter8 wrote: http://www.zshare.net/audio/5430944700b0d77d/

I would think that 'resampling' that into Z2 should be doable, either with your W2Z or using bilstei's method. But then again...
EDIT: But then again...! Though it sounds like a fairly static unchanging sound, when you look at the waveform there's an awful lot of dynamic variation.

I could try doing some patches too.. Especially interested in FM / CZ-5000 world of synthesium..
I was just thinking - I have quite a few Z2 patches that are useless in a normal sense, and produce generative pulses/drones when played from a speficic note with a specific interval.. so how to include this in the evaluation of patches?

I guess you would just include playing instructions in the patch description?tetsuneko wrote:I was just thinking - I have quite a few Z2 patches that are useless in a normal sense, and produce generative pulses/drones when played from a speficic note with a specific interval.. so how to include this in the evaluation of patches?

Anyone else have an opinion regarding entries including a short supporting mp3 or a .mid file to demonstrate the patch in context?
Options:
1. A short mp3 (how short? any limitations e.g. just the patch on it's own, no outboard fx, or other instruments?)
2. A .mid file (any limitations here, length?)
3. Patches on there own and relying upon info within the patch description to give cues as to context, playing style etc?
Including an mp3 or .mid file perhaps has the potential to increase the admin. work a bit (that's if all of the entries are to be uploaded to a single file) and slightly increases the 'burden' upon those judging the entries.
Any thoughts?

With a MIDI file one can see exactly what's going on in terms of MIDI parameters, while with an MP3 one can realistically only guess or approximate. So I'd prefer MIDI files where feasible, as this provides more detail.

OK. I think we should be able to finalize the format/rules etc tomorrow and perhaps decide upon the first theme task.
So if anyone would like to have any final input speak now or for ever hold your peace.

I'd happily let the ball bounce back to you... you initiated this thread... you sure must have thought about a theme so far...?hakey wrote:OK. I think we should be able to finalize the format/rules etc tomorrow and perhaps decide upon the first theme task.

How about a theme inspired by ?
It might be a patch to score the clip, some kind of fx type patch or some kind of patch that is inspired by the atmosphere of the clip. I'm quite happy for that decision to be left to each person's discretion.
Those who wish to can include a .mid file to illustrate the patch in use. The file should play no longer than the clip - as it's 32 secs long I think that this seems reasonable.
If nobody has any further objections I'll make this definite and write up the first contest format/rules sometime tomorrow.

Hi hakey,
It's too bad,(for me anyway) that your only using youtube.com for the theme idea. I would like to try to do a patch on the theme, but I live in China, and youtube was blocked here, about 3 months ago, (for reasons i won't get into) and no proxy, or other web browsers can break the block, so I can't hear the theme.
Maybe someone could post an mp3,aif,wav of it or something.
Thanks,
Michael

Hey Michael, the clip is a sequence generally known as the 'Robot Transformation' from Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'. The youtube clip I've linked to does include some orchestration, but it's fairly nondescript generic old film score type stuff and the audio quality isn't so good - which is to say, the music with the clip isn't what matters. I was thinking that the images would be what people might respond to.MCnoone wrote:Maybe someone could post an mp3,aif,wav of it or something.
You should be able to find plenty of still images from 'Metropolis' elsewhere on the web.
p.s. Urs made the 'official' contest announcement a sticky, so have a look at that for the full rules and stuff.
