it does seem quiet

I can't design sounds yet with Zebra. I am trying though, based off Urs' youtube stuff. I wish there were videos of people creating specific sounds.

I'm looking forward to the contest submissions though.

Don't forget to try and look closely at some presets, you do like.
Then see what they did to achieve that sound.
Examining presets, can help you learn easier.

I was just about to say exactly the same thing.

In fact, I would say perform a dissection - cut bits out and see how it changes the sound. Switch off modules in the grid (R click untick 'active'), or mute a whole column in the grid - do the same in the fx mixer section. See if you can work out what is modulating what, check all of the Osc tabs to see if any Osc FX are being used, or Sync etc.

Try and find one Howard's 'simple' patches the kind that only have one or two modules in the grid and see how he can get some pretty amazing sounds with loads of timbrel variation from just, say, an Osc and a Comb - the 'Noises' folder is a good place to start.

The other thing you can try is just randomly putting a few modules in the grid and see what happens. That's what I do a lot of the time.

BTW The reason for choosing the Metropolis clip for the first contest was partly because it gives plenty of scope for weird sci-fi fx, machine noises and the like - the kind of stuff that you tend to 'discover' by accident when you randomly chain a few modules together.

Which is to say - just have a go (after all AFAIK you can't break Zebra by wiring it up wrong

)

Monty Python's "In Search of the Holy Grail"......................Great movie but I don't know how well it would do for a patch contest.

Metropolis just begs for any electronica background. There are several sections such as when they show the workers that have a natural rhythm to them. Very cool. I went through the patches I've done for Zebra so far and nothing did the clip any justice. I'll work on one to see if I can come up with anything worthy of the scene.

Oh, I thought you were going to say "The Battle Ship Potempkin", or "Citizen Cane", something like that. But, yeah "Holy Grail" is a truly great comedy, right up there with "Dr Strangleove" for me.

No, I'm not that intellectual.

"Forbidden Planet" comes in at number 3 followed by "Little Ceasar" so you can see I'm really low brow.

Forbidden Planet would be a good subject for a patch contest. "Electronic Tonalities by Louis and Bebe Barron".

That was my first choice! - I just couldn't find a clip that was quite right on the youtubes.

Anyway, is there anyone else for up for this (friendly) competition?

There seemed to be plenty of interest when the idea was first suggested, but so far there's 4 patches submitted and it won't be much fun unless there's a few more. The deadline for submissions is tomorrow midnight (or whatever's in my inbox Tuesday morning).

I'd love to take part, but I'm currently obsessed by designing a new oscillator thing (mixture of Phase Distortion, Phase Modulation and FM, patched up with, uhm, *wires*) which I think is a precursor to the long rumoured Berlin Modular. I woke up with this idea a few days ago and got agitated. Unfortunately these are the phases of extremely high motivation that better don't be interrupted

Maybe we should have prizes... for this time I'll throw in an alpha of above thing for the first 3 places, as soon as it gets in shape (that is, at least 4 oscs and 4 envelopes layed out in the editor, plus the last few bits for the audio rate phase distortion, in AU or VST)

New oscillator thing? Sounds very interesting! Do tell us more. So it will be a separate plugin from Zebra? I'll will be following the news on this very closely.

I'm not-so-secretely working on a modular synth with patch cords/wires. Something inbetween an ARP2600, a Cwejman S1 and a Doepfer modular system, with a fixed set of modules but different configurations to choose from. It won't be as versatile/complex/cpu-friendly as Zebra, but it is supposed to have other qualities... especially in the fun department.
