Genealex, sorry for not responding to your comment re. the chosen sampler. I have said already that I wont be changing the rules, but I wouldn't use that as an excuse to ignore a comment :)

You may well be right, but at the time of writing, it seemed to me that it may well be possible to find a commercial sampler with high end features which would provide an advantage even as a playback device ... eg, complex pitch, and sample length matching, formant preservation etc .... stuff that might not be immediately noticable, but would provide a level of capacity and quality, even in playback mode, which would give the user a distinct advantage.

Thats just an example, and there may not be a sampler worth using which has those features, but if it does, then by defining the criteria for our sampler, we've plugged that hole before it opens!! :)

Oh crap, I might not contribute to this one...the track's not working out to be something I'd want others to hear lol. I tried to start another one from scratch but doubt I can get it finished in 2 weeks. Oh well, guess it's not meant to be.

Aw, thats a shame MP, but hope you haven't given up .... I have to admit, this comp is a lot harder than it first appears! ... I dont actually think I'm any further on than you are  ... but two weeks can be a long time when all it takes is for a couple of ideas and sounds to "click" .... and the rest falls into place ... well I hope so anyway!! :hihi:

Whatever I end up with, I'm sure it'll be nothing like anything I've done .... at least since I 'retired' my Atari ST! :)

But the great thing about OSC's are the learning about your style, your workflow, your strengths, weaknesses. For example, I now know working with just a handful of samples in not my cup of tea..I now know that maybe starting everything from nothing(with regards to sound sources) is a romantic notion, but sometimes it's good to play with someone else's presets, as they can inspire whole songs. I now know that there are limitations to enforcing limitations...go figure right? lol. I also now know that 3-4 weeks is unfortunately not enough time for me to do work that I think is up to my personal standards, as I need at least that much time not listening to the track so I can come back to it later with some objectivity. Because of these OSC's I'm slowly getting a better idea of my ideal workflow, and the tools that make me the most creative.

With this in mind, I would be doing a great disservice to myself by not jumping at the Komplete deal going on this month. I may not contribute to this OSC or the next one as my music time is limited and learning these new tools would take up a great deal of time. I look forward to my next songwriting experience not involving creating drum sounds from scratch. :lol

Cant argue with that MP :hihi: ... All the best with whatever you you do!

Oh yes, it took my three attempts to come up with what I did with plenty going in the bin never to be heard again. And that was for a very minimal track... :P

Whilst the VST version has problems it's worth persisting with as the output is then a bit easier to work with in your DAW.

Although the sampling usage did allow me to get a bit poly with a few bits.

And I couldn't get a decent kick out of it for the life of me - so I didn't have one

Remember this is about having fun folks so don't get too hung up about the results :)

Best of luck,
Mouxbar

Hear what yer sayin about the kick! I rendered a few samples which sounded good .... til the were placed in a track! :hihi:

It's Ok to layer samples though, and so a good kick can be achieved with two or three different samples played in unison .... having said that, I'm starting to like the snap, crackle and pop of short single samples, so i'm moving on nicely .... still dont have a clue what its goona end up like though!! :hihi:

.... Actually, I've a feeling I'm gonna enter two tracks ... cos I have a couple of phrases in my track that are not gelling well enough with what I have so far, but which are possibly strong enough to hang another track on.

Hey guys, just a quick bump ... nearly through my "6 gigs in 7 days" spell, so I should be more active in the days ahead.

How are those tracks coming along? :)

Post

Well I'm not hearing a lot of noise about this comp, but I've just put in a couple of hours writing and I'm nearly finished my (first) track!

There's still 9 days to go, and from my own experience doing this sfxr thing, I can safely say it's a refreshing experience!

Takes me back to working with my old Atari and a dinky little device called 'replay' with which you could save sampled audio at 22kbps ... and sounded like sh!t :hihi: ... However, what I'm working with now sounds rather good!

I know its the summer hols and all that, but it would be nice to know if there are still a few folks interested in submitting to this comp ... particularly in view of the enthusiasm that was around for it to go ahead, and the fact that the quality and variety of prizes has taken a leap since the last one.

So, hello everyone .... can I hear you say hello back? :hihi:

Hello there! :D It seems I was right when I said "anyone who dares to make a track with SFXR"...

Cheers,

Max

Judging from the (lack of) submissions it seems this contest is even harder than the Crystal one
I hope you people get stuff done since I'm not participating myself. I'd love to listen...and vote

I'll probably have one ready later today.

I.m still attempting to do one. My host has crashed twice on me and I have lost 2 pieces I was starting to like. The lump on my forehead is starting to heal so I may give it another go.

OK, my entry Beep Jump Roll is now up.

It's done in Live on a Mac, so hefty use of Simpler (no filters) to play back sounds generated in CFXR, the Mac version of SFXR. The compression, delay and reverb plug-ins are all free - although Magnus@Smartelectronix Ambience is donationware rather than purely free. But it is, as far as I can tell, the only option for Mac. The compressors are RoughRider and Slim Slow Slider Sidechain. The EQ is Blue Cat's Triple EQ, which I only just discovered after wondering "now where am I going to find a free EQ?".

I had this vague plan of doing a Deadmau5 ripoff as well on the basis that if SFXR can do one thing it's short stabby sounds. I may (or may not) get time to finish it.

Great stuff, nice to know you're still around guys :hihi:

Cheers for the submission Gamma-UT, and fingers crossed you get that track done njon .... and your forehead regains its proper shape! :hihi:

I have a track finished, just needs a few tweaks and I'll have it posted up either tonight or tomorrow ... then I'll see if I can get a second finished.

I think the hardest aspect to this comp is all the 'getting ones head around' the process and how the sounds behave within ( or outwith ) certain frequency ranges.

If anyone is thinking starting a track ( with 7 days to go!! ) I would advise loading up a good range of different samples and listening to them over a large frequency range before deciding what sounds you think you will use ... could be a few surprises!

... Anyway, gonna go do that bit of tweaking, catch ye later. :)
