Knobs.

Am I the only one that wishes the knobs in U-he products read visually as knobs? In all this time it still slightly bumps me when ever I start a-tweak'n. The ring paradigm is fine, I just wish it was around something that visually read as "I'm a knob that controls a parameter" instead of "I'm a black hole in the UI."

You'll get it. I've planned to add this as a general option.
I've made a few drafts, but am not yet satisfied:

Will take a while till it's there...

Wow, it's amazing how something as small as a knob and a different skin can almost make it feel like a totally different instrument...
Or maybe I'm the only psychosomatic person here.

That's awesome Urs. I knew from your beautiful work in Uhbik you were good with knobs. I don't know why but you could probably trace it to my first Etch-a-sketch that I likes me a nice knob.

Okay, here's my offer... we make a printable sign that says:jensa wrote:Aw, come one. See it as a once in a lifetime thing.billstei wrote:Okay I like those knobs a lot but I'm not comfortable kissing Urs to get them.
.....Only Once Before I Retire.....
..Die Not Sore
and we take a picture of the kiss (eeewwwww) with the sign, and then I get 50% off all future U-he products.

Those knobs really dont tell you much compared to the old dials.
The old dials tells you if a knob (dial) is supposed to go positive or negative. Also old knobs tells you right away which knobs are tampered with due to the color increment. I'm a sucker for the color thing; no color ahh its not used, color ahh its used.
Color display gives you a much more detailed fine view. Imagine one of those (new) know had a 0.50 or 1 value.. you wouldnt spot it but with color you do spot it right away.
It may look nice and clean with one OSC up but imagine a complex setup with lots of OSC and stuff, then it will be very hard to see the greater perspective.
It would look superb on Zebra CM but wayyy too knob crowdy on Zebra 2.

Haven't really tought about it that way. And you're right, the image you provided illustrates this quite perfect. old knobs on a Zebra would be way too confusing. You could still go for a coloured stripe around the knobs, i know other synths do this, just can't think of anymkastrup wrote:Those knobs really dont tell you much compared to the old dials.

These knobs do not communicate info as well as the current ones.zerocrossing wrote:Urs wrote:You'll get it. I've planned to add this as a general option.

Trust me, the screenshot is just a draft.
I've come up with an idea for 3D-knobs that also tell you when they're used or not, and which are less cluttering than the ones oin the draft. The key thing are the tick marks around the knob. They are too prominent.
And who says a 3D-knob can't change colours? It's not a real knob after all...

Hey peeps, chill... he basically said it's a rough draft only.
I doubt Urs would opt for a system that is less informative or useful than the present.
I personally don't like the current knobs, but I'm not against them since they're useable. I also really don't find it incredibly important... at least not as important as the sound coming out. So long as nothing hinders the sound creation process, then I have nothing to complain about.
Edit...
either I'm blind or I completely ignored Urs' post.
Ah, oh well...
Well, count my vote in for knobs that defy a single color rule.
