If anyone's interested here's another patch that I cobbled together for the contest:
Voltz!
It's a very delicate little patch best played at volume late at night, or in the early hours of the morning.
(I was going to enter two patches, but, seeing as no-one else did, I though it wasn't fair for me to do so.)
PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS PATCH!!! - it isn't entered into the contest!

And you never know, if you'd have given it a go you might have surprised yourself.
Maybe next contest (if there is one)?

my mom learned very early the fastest way to get me to do something was to tell me not to do it...

Damn, I'm almost out the door... not time to listen. I wish I remembered to check first thing this morning because all the comments have got me very intrigued with everyone's approach.
Teksonik, you should have joined in! I'm just glad it's anonymous so far... It's definitely a bit embarrassing, but I said this would be for fun and a great learning experience, so I'm standing by that.
I actually spent some time last night exploring a few idea in Zebra... Came close to a decent Transformers sound, but some where along the way blew it. I'll try to mess with it more tonight as I was having fun.
Alright... time to fly before I get in trouble with the girlfriend.

They sound well balanced to me, and it actually makes the patches sound better to have them this way, so a good thing to have done.hakey wrote:Any comments on my decision to balance the levels of the patches? Have I done a fair job? I'm just a bit worried that different ear/monitor combinations might hear things differently.

No need to question it. I think your starting this patch contest was a great idea.hakey wrote:Maybe next contest (if there is one)?
There might be many factors that determine, number of responses(voting), or designers entries. Time of year. Winter seems to have more people here, than summer. More people might enter, if the theme is something people find easier to do. As you might get more people enter, if the theme is "basses" as opposed to "sound effects".
Great work hakey.
Keep going with it.

I just noticed a mistake? In the preset "A Moment Dripping of Menace". Under Voice Mix tab the 1st row is turned "off" (red light is on), no lines are crossed to the 2nd channel row. No sound is getting through to the main on the 1st row. That might not have been the intention on this patch.

These presets are all amazing, I really mean it. I ran the youtube video while playing it and they all fit for me. I had to pick three and I did. But you can be sure it was agonizing.
And here I was thinking it'd be easy to spot MCnoone and mkastrup's presets. I think I need to roll up my sleeves and try to do the next one...

Well spotted! I've put a note in the OP of the voting thread and I'll PM the author to check if that's how it was intended (and reading the info notes with that patch pretty much points to a snafu of some sort).MCnoone wrote:I just noticed a mistake? Well, I can partially put you out of your misery - Michael Kastrup didn't submit a patch (and I'm not sure that I would have allowed him anywaybmrzycki wrote:And here I was thinking it'd be easy to spot MCnoone and mkastrup's presets.

Obviously, knowing who made which patch has killed the 'mystery element' for me!
(For the next contest I'm thinking that maybe the authors could submit their patches to a public, or invite-only folder on one of the file sharing sites - I've only just discovered that this can be done in Box.net and I'm sure that it's true for other sites, though Box.net does seem much the best in terms of 'user experience' - no pop-ups, adds aren't too intrusive, no waiting time for dl's etc.)

I've been thinking that I could probably offer a similar service with a little php script. You can upload a patch or two and then you get an email with a confirmation link. All entries can be put in a zip and hosts for download, all in an automated process...hakey wrote:maybe the authors could submit their patches to a public, or invite-only folder on one of the file sharing sites
This needs a captcha though, otherwise the server will be full of crap.
Hmmmm... now I just need the time to dive into php...
