Hi

One thing that has impressed me about Jo and his MU.LAB is the no nonsense license key system.

I personally do not like USB dongles or challenge and response based on the hardware of your PC/laptop, but they are on the increase.

The fact that Jo releases the software in a kind of track limited freeware is fantastic for the newbie.

The MU.LAB unlimited license fee is also a bargain.

I also find it totally amazing that if you find a new repeatable bug Jo will give you an unlimited license for free. I have never seen that kind of offer before.

Jo for sure is one amazing guy.

(I hope Jo never changes his unique philosophy on copy protection for MU.LAB)

Anyway to the point of this topic, what do you all think?

Copy protection is a burden on the users and to the Developer i think.

Rob Papen had the great idea

to move to the Dongle and beside my case (stop working and no response from Rob Help desk in more than a month) who knows how many are paying the price for a security issue directed to the wrong group: "the responsible Users".

If someone wants a Crack there is no way to stop them. A thief will succeed no matter what and it will contaminate the internet even more due to the challenge.

Look at FL and tell me if they need a Dongle or a hardware link as in Live.
Rob lost a customer with me for lack of commitment in following through with problems. I had to go back to v1.7 with no future in sight.

Live wants me to get married to my PC allowing only one divorce...

I understand them too, you need protection and a Key file can do that too pretty well. I would not like my name to show up out there on someone else's PC.

I am an old fashioned and in my business dealing with CAD design a hand shake is still valid and we are no talking about $100 value.

Anyway this is Jo's financial future and he will have to do what he thinks is right.

liquidsound pretty much sums up my feelings: it's a waste of time and effort for everyone to put complex software copy protection schemes in. They can all be overcome (or the software itself couldn't run), with sufficient effort.

It's surely better to make a good impression on prospective customers: have a demo that lets you get to understand the product and a simple way to make the product "yours".

Oh, and to answer the question: it's a lot better than having to keep old emails handy - I can back up the key along with all my other settings.

The current copy protection is just fine. I doubt anyone is going to reply to your question and say: Oh! Let me think! Wouldn't it be great if we had a password protected E-Licenser, sitting in a newly developed PACE iLok which is authorized via challenge response. Or a MULAB software that switches itself off at ten o'clock every night, so we don't loose the run of ourselves!

Yes and eye scanning! Maybe that's going too far. If they did that, warez would be selling body parts instead of cracks.

The CP method used was definitely an element in my choice to buy Mulab. The main things were of course the program and the Jo's communication on the forum. It's hard to stress enough how much a responsive, fair and committed developer adds to a product.

Well . . . it all started back in the winter of 1965. Having just been born, I was quite young then. But that's another story! Hello! My Name is Aloysius. Hello Aloysius!

After an absence from music making for a long period of time (years) I started messing about with a Program called ComputerMuzys on my Laptop. One thing led to another, and within a matter of months I had spent everything on music software. I got into using Ableton Live after purchasing a Line-6 Toneport UX1. Got Live 5 (full). Eventually upgraded to Live 6, 7, 7-Suite and now I'm at Live 8.0.4.

I was having a problem with a particular VST. I just couldn't get the damn thing to run in Live. I looked around the Net for another DAW. Something cheap enough to get me out of a hole. I stumbled upon MU.LAB! Hmm . . . I said . . . This looks a bit like that ComputerMuzys programme that I was messing about with just before I spent all my money! The support guys bent over backwards to answer all of my questions about the Application. Best thing of all was that because the developers of MU.LAB keep all coding as independent as possible, my troublesome VST actually worked in MU.LAB without any problems at all! And the rest as they say is History!

Except that's not necessary. It's not done to discuss it on KVR but circumvention isn't really that hard.
