MU.LAB as rewire master - Live 8.0.4 as rewire slave

Hi

When I had Cubase and Reason I loaded Cubase first as rewire master and then loaded Reason second as rewire slave so that I could access the synths in Reason and do the sequencing/control from Cubase.

Now that I have MU.LAB and Live 8.0.4 I thought I might try to link them as they are both rewire aware.

My understanding is that MU.LAB can only do rewire master and that is fine. Live 8 manual say Live can be master or slave. The Live manual states it will automatically be slave if it detects a rewire master. OK all sounds good.

1) I load MU.LAB and it grabs the ASIO driver as normal (rewire master)

2) I then load Live 8 and a message states the audio driver is unavailable which is fine because MU.LAB has direct access. Therefore Live seems to be rewire slave.

3) in MU.LAB I then click on an empty slot in a rack to load a device and a message pops up saying there is already a rewire master loaded.

It seems that both MU.LAB and LIVE 8 load as rewire masters in this case.

I was wondering if anyone out there has successfully loaded MU.LAB as rewire master and LIVE as rewire slave.

I am not sure (I am at work) but did you try to first load Live as a Rewire Target within MuLab and not by itself?

Hi liquidsound,

Not sure what you mean, I did the order in my original post.

I seem to remember you have Live (M-AUDIO). Probably best if I wait until you get back to your music workstation and then if you can try your setup.

I read MU.LAB doc on rewire and have experience with Cubase/Reason, I may be doing something wrong if you can, try for yourself.

Try it at home and let me know how you did it, if you can that is.

If I get no joy from MUTOOLS forum I will of try Ableton support, but I am more likely to get better advice here.

If there is a problem with rewire it maybe at either end MU.LAB or LIVE we will see.

Appreciate your help.

Hi liquidsound,

aah! I think I see what you mean.

1) Load MU.LAB
2) Click on an empty slot in a rack
3) Go to Rewire
4) Now I see Ableton Live listed.
5) Click on Ableton Live and the slot now reads Ableton Live.

With my previous knowledge of Cubase/Reason I got confused, I obviously did not read the MU.LAB rewire doc properly.

OK I think the two are now talking.

Cheers once again.

Hi

WOW! :o

My MU.LAB now has time stretch (warp) for audio.

1) Midi and VSTi tracks in MU.LAB.

2) Audio tracks in LIVE

3) Control tempo from MU.LAB

4) Midi/VSTi sync with time stretched (warp) audio.

5) and I can access all LIVEs other toys as well.

Simple MU.LAB GUI with the power of LIVE at the backend.

Lovely!

I wonder what hybrid beast I can make with M3 frontend and LIVE backend.

One word awesome.

It is amazing what you can do with a bit of string between two apps.

There is also another way for things like Reason but is different than the usual Rewire steps. Check this topic.

It can be useful.

Hi liquidsound,

After your help with rewire and now that I can have a MU.LAB frontend and LIVE 8 backend. :tu:

I feel like Alexander the Great when he cried because "there were no worlds left to conquer". :(

1) I have time stretched audio in LIVE tracks

2) Any cpu hog VSTi go in LIVE and then tracks are frozen.

3) Use MU.LAB for pretty much everying else and master control of LIVE.

4) and everything including z3ta+ runs happily in Windows XP SP3.

5) and I have loads of VST/VSTi noise making stuff.

The rewire connection burns little to no CPU and both systems are stable.

Indeed when M3 comes in this arrangement will be even better.

Oh no, shock horror. :o . Is my search finally over. Does this mean that I have to start writing music now and stop playing with all the audio toys I find on the interweb.:(

I cannot even think of a new topic to add to the forum, I am now a shell of my former self.

Only one thing left to do tell a joke.

A horse walks into a bar and orders a beer. The barman says "Why the long face"
