Hi,
Sorry if this question has been asked & answered already; I've done a search but didn't seem to find anything.
Parameter automation seems not to work for any of the u-he plug-ins in Ableton Live 8. In particular, in the pull-down menus for automatable parameters, the parameters of Zebra 2, Filterscape, etc., do not appear. I don't encounter this problem in Logic, nor with other plug-ins I've tried under Ableton. Is this a known bug, or have I configured something incorrectly?
Thanks,
-Luddy Harrison

Plug-ins with a lot of parameters in Live 8 (like Zebra, not like Uhbiks) need to be configured before Ableton sees any of those parameters. To do this, you'll see a triangle on the plug-in device in the Live signal chain; expand this and you'll then have access to a 'Configure' button. If the button turns green, you can then click on parameters within the plug-in GUI; you'll see the parameters populate the expanded plug-in device in Live. It's very easy to do although complicated in text.
You probably just want to do this once or a few times per plug-in. You can group the VSTi into an Ableton rack, and then save to a custom folder (or in the Audio Rack presets list, but that's really crowded).
I've just discovered 8 instances of Zebralette in an Ableton drum rack is fun o.0

With Zebra I highly recommend to automate the XY-controls instead. Just right-click the knob you want to automate, choose "assign to:" and the corresponding XY in the sub menu. If there are multiple assignments already, go to the XY-assign page and erase them.
This has the advantage that you get everything that has a knob.
Some parameters in Zebra can not be reached by automation because a certain plugin format on a certain platform gave me hell if a plugin had more than roughly 700 parameters. So Zebra has I think 670 automatable ones. Most of the rest can however be accessed by XYs, or they are just not really feasable for automation.

Filterscape is s slightly different story. Because of Live (!) I had to cut down the number of automatable parameters to 128. That's why some parameters are still not accessible even though Live can now handle the ones beyond 128 with the method xh3rv describes.
However, the snapshot EQ is 8 snapshots x 4 bands x 3 parameters (is that 96? 144 in Q6 then?), so I specifically left these parameters out. Because the point of Filterscape is that you can automate all EQ settings within the snapshot with a single parameter.

Because of Live (!) I came up with the idea of editable parameter lists. Unfortunately this concept prove to be tricky and a support nightmare. It was too easy to mangle the parameter list and loose compatibility with old projects.
Thankfully Live and that certain plugin format has matured and now all of this was, well, redundant. I'm using the editable parameter list though to move parameters that I squeeze into existing plugs to the back of the list, to maintain compatibility.
Cheers,
Urs

Thanks for the very helpful replies, xh3rv and Urs. Sound like these suggestions will completely solve my problem!
>> I've just discovered 8 instances of Zebralette in an Ableton drum rack is fun o.0
@xh3rv: yeah drum racks are amazingly powerful and compact. one of the best features in Live.
>> With Zebra I highly recommend to automate the XY-controls instead. Just right-click the knob you want to automate, choose "assign to:" and the corresponding XY in the sub menu. If there are multiple assignments already, go to the XY-assign page and erase them.
@Urs: the advantage of this method that all the knobbed parameters become available for automation, whereas not all of the knobs respond to the configure + click method, right? It has the slight disadvantage that the name that is seen in the automation menu and automation lane is X1 instead of Noise Volume, for example...
