Wow this One Mod per Grid deal is a lot more fun than using three for some reason. Got a couple already :D

Hmmm... I can sort of see the thinking behind it. With a really nifty/musical bit of arp work even an unadorned sawtooth could be made to sound impressive - the intended task here is really about encouraging people to explore the inner workings of the oscillator modules. That said the arp is just another MOD source and can be used in creative ways (not just playing simple melodies) and similar effects can be achieved with MSEGS.

Besides, even if there were a strong case for banning the arp I'm not changing the task again!

I'm hoping this time that people might enter two patches :)

Post

Yep... don't change it.

If a preset is great with Arp but lame without, I trust people to file that under "composition" rather than "sound design". On the other hand side, there have been presets that use the Arp as a dedicated sound design tool. Dunno if these would win though...

Michael Kastrup has offered two versions of one patch, 'Balinese Dancer', for the authors of the top three entries. The first patch is in the same one module, one effect format as per the contest, the second adds another instrument and extra effects. As you'd expect from Michael, both are great patches! :)

Why doesn't he enter them?

Yeah, I see no reason to ban the Arp for this contest. I used the Arp section for my last entry, which came in close to last for voting, and it would be more correct to say it should have been filed under composition instead of sound design.

More times than not, I think Arps sound cheesy, but once in a while something great can be produced using them, which is why it doesn't make it any easier to create an Arped patch as opposed to without.

This time around, no arps for me, but I'd be curious to see how others would approach that.

@Hakey... we can enter 2 patches??? If so, that would be great as I always have a tough time deciding what to enter. :)

Yes, please do. :)

(It was written in the rules for the last contest too)

Hmm, well I had kind of assumed that these contests are primarily for enthusiastic amateurs and Michael is a 'pro'. That said, there has never been an explicit ban on the pros from taking part - it just seems to be the way that things have worked out.

I say invite the pros... let's see how well they stand up to the enthusiasts and amateurs :box:

Well I'm not going to explicitly invite or uninvite them - which is pretty much what I said in my last post. :)
