About Ghosted notes

Hi Jo,
me again?!!!
There was a topic about Ghosted Notes in the Sequencer's background at one time.
I used that feature in Podium. Very useful indeed.
What would be a better implementation in my opinion, and which I have not encounter yet, is the ability to switch between the two on the fly, the Ghosted and the Current, for a nice Contrappunto. Even an audio file would be good to have it Ghosted.
Just throwing pebbles in the basket...

By "ghosted", do you mean overlaying one track over another? If so, yeah, it's a useful feature for when you are mousing in MIDI, correcting timing mistakes or playing around with short audio events.liquidsound wrote:Hi Jo,

Yes Overlaying.
See, in Reason a Rex Player gives me all the components (slices) of a Rex file
in the grid and you can really play with it using them for synchronization to other midi events. Here would be just the visual audio wave but it's still very useful.
Of course for notes over notes is very VERY useful. Music is not just sounds, there is also a visual dimension.
See the book "Metamagical Themas: Questing For The Essence Of Mind And Pattern".
By Douglas R. Hofstadter
A fascinating reading for a musician. Highly recommended.
Again this would be another "The MuLab Difference"

BTW for audio the switching in not really usable but for notes it is indeed.
Lets see if technically can be implemented without disturbing too much Jo's action plan.

Can't see why you couldn't overlay a view of the events on top of a ghosted waveform display, so that you could line your events up -- e.g. when giving a drum clip some extra bottom end by triggering some sampled kick notes.
(I don't use MU.LAB's audio sequences, so maybe it's not so useful with audio parts?)
UI: Something like, right-click grid, Overlay Part, Part Chooser displays those eligible parts (i.e. those that play at the same time as this sequence). Pick one and it displays "under" the current grid (i.e. using colours just slightly contrasting with the background colour).

I was thinking more in terms of a shortcut/hotkey for switching because Tab is reserved for Composer/Sequencer.
Adjustment are done better when there is not Context Menu in between because if you work on rapid frames you need not just visual but a sense of Time and Feelings with your hands, heart and mind, so then, Fast In/Out is paramount I think.
Again with Audio is not required but for Notes Yes.

The ideal implementation for me would be where you just select the parts you want to see overlaid and press enter, with the first part you selected being in the foreground, and the sequence editor zone covering from the start of the first part to the end of the last.liquidsound wrote:I was thinking more in terms of a shortcut/hotkey for switching because Tab is reserved for Composer/Sequencer.
Then, each overlaid track would be rendered in different coloured outlines (no fill).
Still, I would imagine this feature would take a lot of work, and I'm sure there's a lot more high priority items on Jo's list.

You are probably right. To such extent it could be.
This is why I was thinking in terms of just one overlap at the time wich would be sufficient unless you are taking about Bach's Musical Offering!
I was doing some testing in Podium and without a quick switching it's not such an innovative feature which would give MuLab an extra Edge.
In Tracktion as in XT you can work on several tracks without going into Solo view, if you want to call it that way, so even though there is no overlapping as in Ghosted mode. you can get a better feeling of the parts while you are editing.
The way I am proposing is a combination of both features and maybe more elegant if you will.
Again, MuLab is about Uniqueness and Simplicity and this could fit the bill, I think...

Yeah, inline editing - as I think it's called - is a handy feature to have.liquidsound wrote:In Tracktion as in XT you can work on several tracks without going into Solo view, if you want to call it that way, so even though there is no overlapping as in Ghosted mode. you can get a better feeling of the parts while you are editing.

I would prefer Ghosted over Inline Editing. What do you think?robenestobenz wrote:Yeah, inline editing - as I think it's called - is a handy feature to have.liquidsound wrote:In Tracktion as in XT you can work on several tracks without going into Solo view, if you want to call it that way, so even though there is no overlapping as in Ghosted mode. you can get a better feeling of the parts while you are editing.
(how about both
It's OK even if we have to wait..... M4?

No a problem.
I am considering to be a loooong term user anyway.
