I think we should make a requirement for future contests that all participants must vote, but like the KVR song contest, not for themselves.
I know it's still early, but I'm surprised that so few have voted... maybe it's a tough choice, but would be cool if we could get more participation (both with voting and entering the contest).

Well in the first contest I suggested that maybe the patch designers should wait a while before voting and I presumed that was what's happening here. Anyway, it's perhaps not really necessary - tbh, I can't remember what the thinking was behind it.
I will go post my vote now.

And, so far as encouraging participation, I'm not sure what the trick is there. It would be nice if more people would have a go. I guess, in part, the trick will be to set tasks that are both interesting and that aren't too intimidating - which was sort of what I was saying about MCnoone's suggestion for a 'Real Instruments' task.
I would find that an interesting task, but I can also see that it might equally put just as many people off - and there wouldn't be much point in a contest with just me, MC and a couple of others. Really we want more people taking part next time, not less. That said, maybe it would be a popular task? If anybody has an opinion on the matter please speak up!

Yeah maybe not a good idea for now. Maybe sometime in the distant future.hakey wrote:If anybody has an opinion on the matter please speak up!
We could try for a BASS sound one though. Could we?
That one I'm sure would get more entries.
edit: The reason I wanted to do a "real instrument" one, was because I have a patch, that I really want to get out there. It's a piano patch I did a couple days ago, and want to share it, as it really shows an amazing ability in what Zebra can do. I'll just prepare it, and upload it for you guys to play with.
One osc, and 2 vcf's.

A few people have brought up the idea of doing more contests similar to the last one. For various reasons, I thought the last one was a great idea and I really wanted to put something together for it. Unfortunately, I barely had any free time at all.
With similar restrictions I think it will help to box people in a little more and perhaps encourage greater participation in future. The major byproduct of this is, of course, that it makes people really learn how to get the best out of some of the modules and help with learning Zebra.
By the way, the entries were all great. Its amazing what some people did with one module. Now I just need to make up my mind on what the top 3 are. No easy feat!

Not that I ever felt the need for them, but I bet some of the patch design gurus here will make good use of it.

I think I've already mentioned elsewhere, but a bit more time for each competition might help. I don't know about other people, but making music is very much a spare time activity for me, and I've already been postponing an actual music project for too long because I wanted to have a go at these patch competitions. It's certainly instilled in me an additional respect for those people who come up with these amazing patch sets (both commercial and free) because it's quite time-consuming crafting a good patch. Or maybe I'm just particularly slow.hakey wrote:And, so far as encouraging participation, I'm not sure what the trick is there.
Well, I have to admit I wouldn't find a real instrument emulation competition that compelling. If it's not an instrument I particularly like (ukelele?), I probably wouldn't even bother entering, and even if it was something interesting I'm not sure I'd be up to the task so again mightn't end up with anything I'd be happy to submit. On the other hand, I don't want to put anyone else off this if they are keen.hakey wrote:That said, maybe it would be a popular task? If anybody has an opinion on the matter please speak up!

Yep - I was thinking along those lines myself.MCnoone wrote:We could try for a BASS sound one though. Could we?

And, to be clear MC, I wasn't ruling out your physical modelling task. I'm just trying to gauge what most people would be interested in doing. If enough like the idea - so be it
Another idea I had would be something like 'playable/expressive instruments' - there's probably a better way phrasing it. It stems from an observation that the majority of patches entered into the contests have been 'weird noise' or soundscape style patches and not necessarily conventionally useful instruments (I'm as guilty as anyone on this count). A 'playable/expressive instruments' tasks would be about creating more conventional patches with the stress on musicality, response to velocity, aftertouch and mod wheel etc.
A quick round up of ideas so far:
1. Physical modelling/real instruments
2. Playable/expressive instruments
3. A task based upon SOS's 'Synth Secrets' series
4. Bass
Like I said - if anyone has any opinions, preferences or ideas, don't keep them to yourself.

Okay. I think Urs said that when this moves over on to his dedicated patch design site it will be a monthly affair - which makes more sense.blurk wrote:I think I've already mentioned elsewhere, but a bit more time for each competition might help.hakey wrote:And, so far as encouraging participation, I'm not sure what the trick is there.
I think that the idea would be 'any real instrument' rather than a particular instrument.Well, I have to admit I wouldn't find a real instrument emulation competition that compelling. If it's not an instrument I particularly like (ukelele?)

I've been thinking the same thing myself - I also find myself listening to patches in a different way and with a new appreciation for just how well crafted some of them are.

Oh, I see the link now!
Yes, very nice
Is there any significance in Arp becoming Arp/Seq?
I wonder what the curved arrows to the right of the patchname do (undo/redo - that would be good!)?

Michael (Kastrup) has made a movie illustrating his Balinese Dancer patch (to be given to the authors of the top three patches in the contest):

The original 1 OSC 1 FX patch will be available for all Zebra users.
