Zebra 2.3 - Strange UI Problem

Hi I'm using Zebra 2.3.1 in Cubase 5.

When I'm programming a patch, every now and again a window will suddenly pop up and disappear very quickly. After this has happened, Zebra no longer resonds to my midi keyboard input (although the Zebra window still appears to have the focus).

The only way that I can get Zebra "back to normal" is by minimizing Cubase, then maximizing it again. Everything will be fine for another few minutes, until the mysterious window pops up and disappears again.

I know that probably sounds very strange! I'm pretty sure that the window is coming from Zebra, as I don't see it with any other apps / VSTs. As you can probably imagine, this is very annoying when trying to be creative.

Any ideas what the cause might be?

Thanks

Absolutely no idea. What does the Window look like? Any chance for a screenshot?

Hi,

It's so fast that I'd never be able to capture it with a screenshot. I've just downloaded some free screen capture software, and I've caught it as a movie. The file is quite big as it's a fullscreen capture (around 12mb) is there somewhere that I can send it? (I'd prefer not to post it here as it has my registration name visible etc).

Some more info about the problem:
- The window is often too fast to see. The Zebra window briefly goes white though
- In the movie, you can see something new appearing in the taskbar, then disappearing very quickly
- The problem only occurs when you are tweaking a knob with the mouse
- I can get the problem to occur with 100% reliability by grabbing a knob with the mouse, and moving it back and forth constantly for about 15 seconds.
- I've actually seen this with Zebra2 on Cubase4 in Windows XP on my old machine

Thanks for the quick response

I'm just uploading the video file to a free file host now. I'll pm you the details.

I'm going to bed pretty soon, so it will be tomorrow before I can respond to any more messages.

Bye!

Might be better to play your video, stop where the window appears, then capture the screen (or just the bit with the window in it).

Thanks, downloading now. I'm very curious to see this.

I've had a couple of hours of sleep too. Happens :)

Will answer later, after going through heaps of things in my inbox while having my first coffee...

Hi Urs

Did you get chance to have a look at this? Please let me know if you'd like me to do any more tests. E.g., I've got an FL Studio License, so I could install that to test if the problem happens in other hosts if you like?

Howard: That's a good suggestion and it's what I was originally planning to do, but I thought it might be useful for Urs to see the entire sequence of events.

Thanks guys.

Ooops, oh yeah... it's mind-boogling, indeed.

I can assure you that it isn't Zebra who's opening a new window, or whatever is going on in the task bar.

I guess that Cubase has some code in it that checks how busy threads are. Unfortunately the gui thread is very busy when mousing Zebra as it somehow doesn't seem to release time between mouse events. It may be possible that switching to a timer based mouse tracking (as I had planned anyway) will resolve the problem.

Hi Urs,

That makes sense - it does seem to only happen when constantly holding down the mouse button and adjusting a knob. I suppose a workaround for me would just be to use the knobs on my midi keyboard to tweak parameters when I'm programming a patch. I'll try this when I get home from work.

If you'd like me to test any proposed fixes for this problem (beta builds of Zebra etc), please let me know - I'd be happy to help out.

Thanks
