Anybody done their own Receptor upgrade?

Got a Rev C, would like 4gb RAM in there, but shipping from Uk plus update costs would be huge. What parts are needed, motherboard, I'd quite happily retain the hard drive, I'm just looking for more memory. Putting together your own PC is a no brainer, so surely it can be done? Or is it custom BIOS from Muse that is the stumbling block?

My limited understanding of the "nuts and bolts" beneath the hood of a Receptor, is that yes, you can upgrade your own RAM, as I have done that myself. It's as easy as opening up your DAW and adding more.

That being said, if you were going to attempt to upgrade the MoBo yourself I am fairly certain that you'd run into problems on the software side of things. From other threads I have seen in the past, it sounded like you'd have to rebuild the whole software.

As for hard drives, it can be done, but takes a greater understanding of working within Linux and something called "shell".

Also, you might find that our friends at Muse discourage this sort of conversation on their forum, and I don't blame them. So you might search elsewhere in Googleland for more answers.

If my Receptor ever "dies" you can rest assured what you are talking about will become a pet project of mine! ;)

I thought the Rev C models only supported up to 2GB RAM?

Post

It does only support 2GB with Rev C. Surely if I retain the hard drive it's just the mobo upgrade. Is the OS booted off the hdd or the mobo? If it's the hdd surely replacing the mobo would be easy? Are their any other qualified service personnel other than at Muse across the world? By the time shipping and upgrades were paid for, it would be probably as cheap getting another Rev B/C

Yes, I was trying to clarify the post I quoted to be sure that poster wasn't confused about this. Replacing the motherboard would of course be the only way to go above 2GB RAM. The OS would be booted off the HD, I haven't heard of any mobo customizations by Muse with any fancy embedded stuff :)

Unless you get the exact motherboard that Muse uses, you may in trouble with drivers or connectors. The internal display and switch panel is plugged into something - USB?

Don't open it up or the snake inside mite bite you
A minor scale is a major scale starting 3 half steps down from the major and visa versa. Any Chord has as many versions as it has notes.

LOL there was no snake in mine, am I entitled to a partial refund???? That said, I don't recall seeing the internal USB port like they advertise so you can tuck your iLok in that when playing live. I'll have to open it up, put my own snake in, and check for that port.

well the front panel had power, a switch line, Analog I/O for the source and phones and Digi I/O for the data (control and LCD)

So do we know what mobo is used in the Receptor 2. I'm not being tight with money, as I already did the upgrade from B to C a couple of years ago from UK to US. I just feel that with shipping it's way overpriced for what it is. If Muse were happy to ship the parts I'd quite happily fit them. I'm a fan of Muse and they have given me a great gigging sound, I just want the international upgraders to have a bit more option

I think, you need also new version of system 1.8 because old linux kernel didn't support new features like SATA hard drives... And upgrade from 1.7 isn't available yet...I try to compile old kernel to another platform (Pentium 4, i386 etc.) and system will boot, X are running but VST host is not working (it is binary file) :-( So IMHO it will not work on new mobo with dualcore processor...

It's an Intel Desk top MOBO Model number DQ35JOE. I can only
find a DQ35JO at intel but I can find it by searching and browsing through
multiple sites. It's a $120 MOBO. the stock board has audio on the back. but I guess they desoldered the cube and removed it
