The plan is to offer a new drive to Rev C users (in which case they keep their old drive as a backup) and offer low-cost installation of any sofware they own. The good news is that most software won't "eat up" additional authorizations because the mobo hasn't changed... all the customer needs to do is enter in the auth number and it should "just work".

This is by far the most sensible approach in my opinion. Count this as my vote for the "new drive, keep my old drive" option...

We're really reticent to do this because it is SO easy to brick a drive with this kind of thing, all you need to do is have a power glitch or bump the USB connector and you are in a heap of hurt. We know that our customers can do this, but its more our desire to make sure that the update happens absolutely reliably that is making us shy away from this approach... The added downside is that you'll have to start from scratch installing all your software, something that will take a very long time.

If anyone has any other suggestions we're all ears.
I think the USB thumb drive suggestion is an excellent idea.

Another option would be to make ISO install images available for each OS update for those that have USB CD-ROM drives that they can hook up to their Receptors. If each released ISO image contained the full OS, then a failed update would simply mean that you'd have to restart the install process. Given that the new Receptor OS is running on Fedora Core, it shouldn't be difficult to create a Fedora remix CD with this functionality.
As for your Syncrosoft dongle support... I'm preparing a unit to go to Steinberg who has pledged their support to help us get it working. We REALLY want to get it working since there is quite a lot of cool software using Syncrosoft these days, and we'd love to get the Steinberg software running as well, of course.
Would this include eLicenser software license support? I'd love to see Waldorf Largo running on my Receptor.

Thanks for the suggestion on the ISO image, we've thought about that a lot, and that in fact may be the best way to go.

As for Syncrosoft, the plan is to have elicenser running in Receptor OS. I'd love to run the Waldorf stuff as well, along with ReFX, Arturia of course, and especially Rob Papens stuff...

Cheers

:o

I never would have believed you would go this route, but it would be much more convenient.

Please do...

Not only would this allow the tech-savvy Receptor users with Rev. C Receptors to update their own operating systems, it would also make it easier for your tech support people to install updates on Receptors, as the update process would be simpler (hook up a USB CD-ROM, start the Receptor, modify the BIOS to boot from the USB CD-ROM, and install). It's my understanding that the update process is currently a bit complicated.

Depending on the internals of the audio system, there might also be potential extra benefits for Linux-savvy Receptor users that want to dabble in customizing their Receptors. For example, I would love to install a Linux-based MIDI sequencer on my Receptor that could trigger all of the different VST instruments, and make the current Receptor GUI an application that would run alongside the sequencer. If I attempt to do that now and end up messing up my Receptor, then my only option for continuing to use the Receptor is to send the Receptor back to Muse Research. However, if I had a CD-ROM with an install image, I could simply reinstall the operating system.

Thank you for listening to my suggestion.

I dont own Receptor, I just want to see if someones hosed thier setup by upgrading yet, any takers? :)

The 1.8 beta release was taken down due to the discovery of an installer error on some machines. It has now been fixed and is back up on the site.

If you have already downloaded and installed the update, PLEASE DOWNLOAD THIS LATEST RELEASE and install it as well... that will ensure that you don't have the correct installation on your drive.

Please take this release for a full spin, and report any problems ASAP. If we don't hear anything from anybody, we will likely make this public as the final release this Friday, August 28th.

Thanks for your help on this!

I'm also very interested in syncrosoft support on my rev C .. maybe someday run korg legacy and hypersonic!

Is it already possible to buy an pre-installed s-ata drive?

Will omniphere be playable on a rev C with it's cpu power?

Thanks, Groove. I know I'll be going with th new drive, performance is always an issue, no matter how fast the system (my piano and my Hammond have ZERO latency, unless you count the time from piano hammer release until string contact...)

Keep us posted (I know you will...)

Hi Groovology

today I try update my system on Receptor Rev C to 1.8 but instalation failed because of dependencies: receptoros-release >= 1.8.20090430-1 is needed by receptor-update-1.8.20090821-1 . Is there any how-to upgrade receptor OS from RevC 1.7 to 1.8?

I think you missed this on the software update page:
The version 1.8.x software update release will work on RECEPTOR 2 hardware currently running version 1.8.x software ONLY. It cannot be used with version 1.7 systems. Please contact Muse Research for more details.
We've also discussed here that it will require a reformat or hard drive replacement, unfortunately.

Hi,
in release notes is:
"If you have a Rev C Receptor this release CAN be installed
on your unit but it requires swapping the drive out.". I clone hard drive so I can format it but how to install new OS?

Hi there

Unfortunately, it is not a matter of cloning. The V1.7 and V1.8 software versions are radically different in file structure, permissions, and a ton of other stuff. We spent many months trying to do incremental installs that would allow you to simply patch and replace the existing structure of 1.7, but the results were not always perfect and we decided that the best way to ensure that the update to 1.8 happens successfully is to reformat and reinstall the drive.

For the time being, we are going to be offering a low cost drive purchase program so that you can swap out your old drive with the new one. The new one will be higher performance (its SATA) and we will offer it in several configurations so if you already own Komplete 5, for example, you won't have to reinstall it.

Details are forthcoming on this program, but it should happen very soon after we release the 1.8 update. We have looked at ways that you can reformat and update your unit in the field, but we are concerned that some customers (obviously not any of you!) would not be aware that it is going to blow away all the data on their drive and thus create a support problem. So until we can come up with a way that ensures successful field reformatting updates, we are going to just offer drive replacement.

I know this will make some of you angry, but for right now we think it is the best solution available to us.

Thanks for your understanding!
