AKJ wrote:I just tried the redline plugin against isone (full version, so no beep) and I must say that isone sounds imo more realistic and is much more versatile than the redline monitor plugin.
I did the same (though I only demoed Isone very short time.. about a minute) and found exactly the opposite. It's not about realism, it's about results. Red Line Monitor does not get in the way at all. It simply does not change the frequency response like Isone does (and believe me, it does, a lot!).

I think trying to simulate 100% the monitor+room+headsize+ear is the wrong way to do it. It's much more effective to try to understand what makes mixing on monitors superior to headphones and then add these benefits instead.

Another problem is the room simulation which is way too prominent and doesn't sound at all like a well treated studio room, at least not in my experience/opinion.

Having said all that.. can't really comment because it's impossible to demo Isone. Who knows, maybe after a thorough calibration the parametric HRTF stuff really works.

How thick can you be?? I'm NOT accusing it for HAVING a copy protection. I'm accusing it for having an incredibly STUPID copy protection and one that MAKES NO SENSE.

A beep protection is used for plugins that give instant gratification (flanger/phaser/delay/reverb whatever) and can thus be abused by using real-time rendering.

Jeroen's Isone is a plugin that you DISENGAGE when rendering. It is ONLY a mixing aid. It makes absolutely NO SENSE AT ALL to have the beep there. None. Period.

well, without the beep it would be the full version (since, in this case, blocking rendering for the demo does indeed not make sense, as you yourself pointed out). the only other solution would be to time-limit the demo. this could be suggested to the dev. But I guess you made your opinion already - after a deep testing of one minute.

then:
1. I guesss the approach of the app is quite convincing. If you want to model rooms in head-phones you have to model all aspects
2. I do not believe that room monitoring is in any way superior to head-phone monitoring - they are different and if you want your mix to sound well in headphones and rooms you should try in in both. thsi plug gives you tjhe possibility to simulate different rooms and speakers in your head-phones: for me this is the key thing!

Not following this. How do you mean disengage?

Actually I believe the plugin may also be applied as an effect while rendering in order to create a binaural audio mix. This would be beneficial for podcasting and creating a mix specifically for headphone listening.

Having said that, I believe it would be easier to evaluate the plugin if the beep was replaced by a periodic low-level white noise or if the demo was set-up to be fully operational but expire after a pre-determined demo period.

I am not going to bad-mouth Jeroen though. He has made a number of excellent plugins available at low or no cost to the end-user. If he wants to release a demo of a low-priced plugin with an annoying beep I won't argue with him.

Thanks for all of your efforts Jeroen!

+ 1000 :tu:
I would add there is a lot of products out there that don't even have demo, a time limited version is not always good if not done properly because what will prevent you to change your computer clock date ??
I used to use HDPHX VST but there was no controls ...

Well what can I say...

If you don't like the beep, than just don't use the plug and suggest another means for copyprotection (preferably one that does not need on line verification, serial numbers, and alike). As always I'm open for any constructive suggestions 8)

For the frequency response not being flat: this of course heavily depends
on the settings. With very neutral settings
(room acoustics off, loudspeaker simulation off, cue strength=0),
the total amount of energy going in one channel and out in both channels is virtually flat up to about 19 kHz or so.

However this is a very unnatural situation since it assumes that
people don't have any pinnae, but only holes in their heads for hearing... :scared:

Ok, the demo version has been modified according to some suggestions here:

- the beep is replaced by white noise
- the level is now -40 dB (instead of the previous -20 dB level sinusoid)
- the interval is now 30 seconds instead of 15 seconds
- the duration is now 0.5 seconds instead of 1 second

Hopefully this is acceptable for everyone; the alternative route
of time-limited demos requires substantially more work from my side,
and indeed can be circumvented easily in many ways...

Thanks!

Hopefully bmanic will be a bit less cranky and give it another look. I hope so - I value his input.

He does seem in a rare foul mood. I bought this plug yesterday...didn't even bother with the demo. For $20? Pocket change. :)
