Well, there are any number of ways of interpreting this. One is awareness of the larger world and our place in it. In an ego-centric culture, looking beyond our noses is not always the rule. Nor is awareness. If the words are not taken literally, a lot of ways to think about life open up.

its a bit like kylie ripping off opus 3 or nirvana ripping off the killing joke. swap a few notes around and voila!

its more than just the chords, its the instrumentation and the playing style. i think it sits perfectly between plagiarism and theft.

david nutella is crap anyway, if your gonna rip off somebody, rip off miles davis or jimmy hendrix, not coldplay.

I don't think they do have an "obvious lack" of prowess and the stuff I like by them is very sincere and tender - indeed that's what I like about them. Songs like "Trouble" or "Yellow" are just beautiful with great lyrics and music and so is some of their later stuff though I feel they have got rather samey (but so do a lot of bands).

There's a theoretically infinite number of sonic combinations. However, a very finite number of them are tolerable to listen to (historically speaking.. we're leaving out light noise and power electronics.. which most people disregard anyway).

Personally, I think Coldplay is annoying. I don't know if they are talented or not, but I don't respect them as artists (for all I know they're really nice people though) and I can't stand that vocal style (yet I find a demented skinny Californian screaming "divine infect, divine infection" with demonic effects on his vocals really awesome).

To each his own.. just.. keep your own.. over there.. so I don't have to hear it

I love this about musical sites on the internet.

People start throwing opinions around, because that's what people do. Most of these opinions are negative because homo contemporaneus is a querulous animal.

Because musicians are sensitive types, they are, quite naturally, offended when they see someone writing nasty things about their favorite artists. But because they have to pretend that they are tough (everyone is a tough guy on the internet), they don't say: 'that offends me'. No, they remember who offended them and vow to abuse them later, when they are foolish enough to voice their enthusiasm about something.

This repetitive loop of hostility accounts for at least 35% of the bandwidth consumed on music-related internet sites.

Since the coming of the interweb a new species, Homo contemptoranus, has rapidly evolved

Which makes them 40% nicer than most internet sites.

Well, since you didn't point out who you were directing it at, I will assume you were directing it at me. And I am offended.

My opinion was stated in the course of discussion and in no way impacted my statements or biased my other statements.

If a band I particularly like is sampled/copied/et al by a band I don't particularly like, I might be a sour bitch about it, but such is the nature of all mankind does, building upon what others have done. "There is nothing new under the sun" (and I'm sure the writer(s) of Ecclesiastes wasn't the first to say it!)

In fact, your comments appear to be a sort of passive-aggressive attack upon someone, or perhaps a general directionless anger. Perhaps you would like to talk about it? Because I'm certain everyone here can agree that people, no matter online or off, are quite often assholes. Though some are nicer about it than others.

edit: typo.. probably more in there!

Wow.

Sir, I have no idea who you are, really.

I was just making a general observation. Assuming it was a veiled attack on anyone is erroneous.

When I want to address what someone in particular says, I generally quote them.

based on the title of this thread, I'm surprised no one mentioned Timbaland...
