I'll start the voting this time...

1. Aah... (I'm a sucker for formants, this is just gorgeous)
2. Bend of Gypsys (very playable, just exactly what was asked for in this comp)
3. iT iS (also very playable)

Post

I've had a chance to listen to them at reasonable volume now so...

1. Saint & Sinner - an interesting timbre and makes good use of modulation. A tiny -subjective- criticism: I found it just a bit shrill. A bit more off the top would have made it even better for me. It goes without saying, that that's only my opinion/taste; tbh, I find many of these patches just a little on the toppy side, but it may well be that that's how everyone else likes them?
2. Phase Quartet - not too dissimilar to S&S, another nice timbre.
3. Biffle Ball Bass Does what it says on the tin. A simple but definitely usable bass and I liked what the mod wheel does.

Piercing Lead very nearly got in there - a nice, chilled-out, EPish sound (not really what it said on the tin  ), with excellent use of Velocity, AT and Mod Wheel - unfortunately, it just sounded a little out of tune to my ears. Change the LFO from Free to Gate and it would have been my No1. (and maybe a bit more shaved off the top  - again that's just my taste).

(And I could have gone on and mentioned a fair few more. There were plenty of patches that fulfilled the brief very well and they all had something to recommend them - the submissions may have been fewer, but the general standard, I think, has been higher this time around :) )

1> Bend of Gypsys

2> Aah...

3> iT iS

after playing through all of them I was gonna go with Aah... 1st, but with more playing I really like all the timbres you can get with Bend of Gypsys more

I have to say this contest produced the most diverse and interesting patches so far

For me it was really astonishing to see what can be done with just two modules (FM oscillator and compressor) and minimal CPU impact. This sound is also very playable, greatly usable and expressive, so here's my order of preference:

1.: Biffle Ball Bass
2.: iT iS (very original, playable over a rather wide range and expressive, allows for lots of interesting timbres)
3.: Bend of Gypsys (I consider this a very versatile and musically flexible lead sound)

1. ahh

2. Phase quartet

3. oragami sunset (odd how some notes don't have the bell chime in it, but some before and after do. c#6-b6 don't have it)

Many good ones in this batch!

1. Saint & Sinner - All that power and emotion from a single OSC module!

2. Aah... - Gorgeous and hypnotic!

3. Zap - Great shimmering, electrical lead!

(Would be 4) Origami Sunset - Really nice mallet textures!

1) Aah - There are some really efficient things in this patch, like keyscale -> attack on the envelope - so simple but so great for the patch, or the subtlety of the pitchwheel, and very finely tuned.

2) Saint and Sinner - This also is incredibly efficient, and I really liked that it was not only expressive but also expressive in a way only synthesis really could be.

3) Zap - I had to tweak some velocity settings to get this to where I could play it sensitively (maybe I just have pushy fingers ....), but once I had done that it was a very unique and cool sound.

Notable: Analog X-Mod lead (and the Vintage Lead, I'm assuming same person?) felt instantly playable, besides simplicity in structure it's nice to see something that's simple to just drop into.

Despite the relatively small number of entries, it was really interesting and refreshing to see a lot of things being done w/ MIDI performance parameters. Definitely a fan of this month's entries.

For me, it's:

1) Aah

2) Butter Fingers

3) Saint & Sinner

It was very close between Aah and Butter Fingers. Both used controllers really well IMHO. Butter Fingers was especially playable in the way that it split the pitch bend, so it works very nicely with a joystick controller, plus the aftertouch response was good. With Aah, again the pitchbend came with an interesting surprise. Both, also, feel very usable. Perhaps Butter Fingers more so as Aah has a limited range in which the formant works. However, Aah had more of the (ahem) wow factor in the way that it used the formants.

After that it was Saint & Sinner. Again, interesting reaction to some of the controllers but a bit of a special purpose patch.

One thing that struck me was the shrillness of some of the patches. It's good to hear something cutting through when you need to, but some started as screamers and went all the way to 11. I thought, for overall playability, although you lose the immediate impact when auditioning, some could have been a bit more mellow on low velocity or mod wheel but then let rip as you hit harder or push the mod wheel. I will also admit to a bias towards those patches that made more obvious use of aftertouch as I prefer using that to the modwheel for filter opening etc (unless it's a stabby bass or something, obviously).

here are my votes...

1) Origami Sunset: nice "bell" tones, with a touch of Electric "FM/DX-style" piano, nice use of the modwheel.

2) Aah...: wonderful "cello-like" and string sounds, nice addition from the modwheel...just the lower octaves are a bit too loud for me (try adjusting keyscale on OSC1 &2).

3) Zap: another excellent FM/DX piano, good sounds, i like how the modwheel brings more FM sound.

Honorable mention: Vintage Lead (fairly basic sound, but really nice and playable), Bend of Gypsys (I like the sound, but it gets too "distorted" in the lower octaves for my taste).
