Epik Drums: Ken Scott Collection for Infinite Player

Forgive me for being a little off topic, but considering this thread is Ken Scott related...When Reason's Abbey Road Keyboards Refill came out, I really wanted it bad, but I have no interest in buying Reason (not a knock on their product, I just have too many products to learn and deal with already). It would be great if SR and Ken could produce something similar for Kontakt. I mean, considering SR has already put out so many excellent vintage libraries, this one would seem to make sense.

Well, actually Ken has recorded a bunch of other instruments with us that will be coming out. One of them is a gorgeous Steinway Grand Piano. He gets great piano sounds... of course, The Beatles, Bowie, Supertramp and Elton John kind of PROVE that point!
We also sampled some cool uprights... don't worry, we mean INFINITE when we say "Infinite Player". There's a ton of instruments in the works recorded by friends of ours like Ken Scott, also Nick Davis from Genesis Farm Studio (new vids on ) and I am actually working on an album with one of the producer/engineers but I can't talk about that yet... very cool though! And fun which is a major factor for me.

Well, we've neglected BFD2 so I am sure a lot of BFD users will be happy we're jumping in BIG for the first BFD kit just to let them know we are serious about doing it. The only reason it will take longer for Infinite Player is that we do updates in "batches" with NI and they have to encode it for the Kontakt Player etc. Also, for Infinite we usually do the kit AND the grooves... the grooves are EXTREMELY complex to do these mapped multi-track time-aligned Rexes (and get the producer/engineers, in this case Nick Raskulinecz who produced the last Rush album "Snakes and Arrows" to come into a top studio and do PRESETS!!!!! - we think big...). So, since BFD can only do kits and not audio grooves it makes sense that some of these kits come out sooner in that. In fact, we have Ken Scott's drummer's kits about 80% done in BFD format or more but in his case he didn't want to release them without the grooves since part of the whole thing about his title is the grooves combined with the kit... whereas with Neil's it is as well but then again THAT monster kit alone is worth the price of admission. So, each drummer and each title has different needs both technically, artistically and politically... not to mention time and resources. It is amazing all that we ARE able to get done though being still a relatively small company.buscemi wrote:Can't wait for the Cinema Sessions. If there was every a sound you heard on any of these records that you wanted to have... say it! We may recreate it with Ken and sample it. Of course you have to know these albums. How about Ringo's drumkit from "Magical Mystery Tour"?
In particular, the definitive sound of the snares in "I Am the Walrus" and "Hello, Goodbye" would be fantastic! I'd love a multi-velocity kit that captures all the subtleties of Ringo's drum sound on that album, including the room sound.

It's a guitar sound from "Baby You're a Rich Man" on "Magical Mystery Tour". It kicks in on the left channel with the refrain at 1:15. It is a strange-but ultra cool-sounding guitar which resembles the sound of a talk box. It sticks around for the rest of the song after that.
Even if you guys don't try to recreate that, I'd love to hear Ken's explanation of how they achieved that effect. I have been in awe of that sound and loved it for years.
I'm glad to hear that you've done some of those Ringo drum sounds with Mr. Scott. I am extremely eager to acquire them, and I really hope you can give us versions of the kits with LOTS of velocity layers (on snares and toms especially) so that we can really simulate a Ringo performance. Any idea when these might be released? I have a Beatle-related project getting finished up over the next couple of months. Would like to use them.
Would also love for you to create a detailed Rickenbacker 4001 instrument with Ken Scott, also with lots of detail and flexibility. Might be nice to do a Hofner bass as well... really with McCartney's style during the Beatle era mixing the direct and miced bass with EMI and other gear used at the time.
Other things... hmmmmm... how about sampling and recreating just about every instrument as they sound on the White Album? Magical Mystery Tour too. Love the piano sounds, basses, the guitars, the horns, and everything. I am learning how to simulate many of those sounds using many of the VIs I have already combined with cool effects and vintage gear simulations... but I'd be the first buy a Sonic Reality attempt at pre-packaging some of those Beatle sounds.

Can you please also ask Ken whether any other Beatles played on the Wonderwall album? I'm sure George Harrison did, but I suspect there is also some Ringo and maybe others in there as well on songs like "Party Seacombe" and the title track used in the movie. Great tunes, those.

Well, Ken already helped East West out with some engineering on Fab Four. If you're a Beatles fan that one seems like a no brainer. I have it and while I don't like the way everything was done there are always some gems in almost any product like that which make it worthwhile. But I don't want to repeat the same sounds unless there's a reason to sample the instrument "our way" such as a Lowrey LSO-1 which I have (that's the Lucy In The Sky sound) or a Baldwin Electric Harpsichord (which I had originally sampled and LOST the samples but I met someone who has one so I am going to sample it through an EMI console).
We actually own some EMI equipment now (because I am a Beatles nut) and we have access to both types of consoles - the EMI R.E.D.D. 37 and the R.E.D.D. 51 as well as a TG12345 desk too (for later Beatles and Floyd style Abbey Road sounds). Although the other place The Beatles recorded was at Trident Studios on a Trident A-Range (actually the predecessor which is a Sound Techniques A-Range). Ken recorded "Hey Jude" and some other tracks there. So not everything Beatles was recorded at Abbey Road.
I have to admit I've become completely spoiled in him being like an Obi-Wan mentor through all of this. I've gotten the chance to ask him a million questions about Beatles sessions, Bowie, Pink Floyd... for instance I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. Ken was the engineer who recorded the LAST Floyd song with Syd Barrett and the FIRST song where David Gilmour took over. What a time to be around! So of course Syd questions... was he that crazy etc.? Actually Ken didn't find him THAT crazy really. Flakey and spaced out but not looney toons... not yet anyway. He wasn't there when Syd supposedly showed up at Abbey Road with a stringless guitar on the Wish You Were Here sessions. That was much later and by then he could have been more "fried".
The other story I love is Ken's FIRST orchestral recording session as an engineer... I think 17 or 18 years old. Guess what it was... I AM THE WALRUS!!!!! He had never recorded an orchestra before that apparently and was just thrown in. None of the classical engineers at Abbey Road who worked in Studio 3 wanted to work with The Beatles oddly enough. They were older and I don't know if rock n' roll was just "beneath them" or if they just didn't want to deal with the "tudes" or the unpredictability of schedules. Ken told me that The Beatles were very unpredictable as to when they'd show up to record but that they always knew to prepare for the session by a certain audible cue which was the sounds of screaming fans! Whenever any of The Beatles showed up to work at Abbey Road there'd be tons of girls screaming outside and the engineers would say "okay, time to get to work!".
But, that's nothing. You should hear the stories of that era and the 70's and 80's through Bowie to Missing Persons... or Duran Duran where for whatever reason Simon Lebon would ask Ken to call him Charlie. WEIRD stories too about Warren Cuckarillo and Dale Bozzio... characters. We've interviewed a bunch of people like Herbie Flowers (bassist on Take A Walk On The Wild Side) and Trevor Bolder (bassist for Bowie Spiders from Mars) as well as the drummers in his first collection. We interviewed a lot of the people who are in that book Recording The Beatles such as Chris Thomas at Abbey Road (and I had to squeeze in some Dark Side questions even though Ken was slightly annoyed about it), Ken Townshend, Dave Harries and many others. His product will come with a DVD but really there's so much more for a book if Ken finds the right publisher. I've just been helping him with it out of personal interest in this stuff so we went far beyond what was needed for his sample collection. Do you blame me? He is a WEALTH of classic behind the scenes info about rock n' roll history and I'm a music history buff like some of you are so... don't worry I will get you guys some cool stuff (and yes Zedd, including a Hofner Beatle bass and maybe a Ricky 4001 even though we sampled TWO of Mike Rutherford's 4001s already though so... there's only so many 4001 samples one needs).

But as a sneak peek... Here's the ad for it which is like a movie poster. The product is actually called "EpiK DrumS - A Ken Scott Collection"
The reason we called it "Epic" (or Epik with a K for Ken) is because of the extreme lengths we went through to recreate classic drum sounds like this. The original producer, engineer, original gear, 5 original legendary drummers and as close as we could get to the original drum sets and studio environments, 2 years in the making... it was a big undertaking. It is also part of a series of products we're doing with Ken where we're capturing specific sounds of music history, the timeless sounds that people wonder about (like me) and wish they had in their production/writing set up. Pretty luxurious to have his involvement at this level. I've learned a lot in the process.

I'm getting closer and closer to finishing off my Beatley album, and I sure would like to use some of those Ken Scott Magical Mystery Tour drums on a few of the songs. Any idea when this product will be available?
Is there any chance I could give you an advance payment for a preliminary beta version, or something? Even just a few short loops or an incomplete IP kit would be helpful. Please feel to send me a PM if this would be possible.
I am using assorted eSoundz drum loops and ReTank percussion in almost all of the songs already, but if I can possibly improve some of the tracks with even better snares or hats, then I'm willing to spend the time replacing some of the drum hits.
