You are so correct.

The first (and only) single I bought was (ahem)....Popcorn by Hot Butter. I was hooked on the synth. My little sister bought Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas. My kids still listen to both 45s.

I told the salesguy there was a scratch on the surface.
He looked at the vinyl on both sides and gave it back to me telling me
it was just fine, and there was probably dust on my needle.

Than i told him the real story and he took it back.
This was one of my first good lessons in life

I really don't remember which of these I owned and which were technically owned by my brothers...don't know which was bought first because they're all from 1969:

Singles were king because I always had enough money for one or 2, but not enough for an album (after school shopping at the Woolworth and Kresge's)

See, I had this deal with my two brothers. When one of us had a birthday, the other two would each buy them 6 LPs as presents. We'd coordinate so that we wouldn't duplicate the LPs. Come Christmas, we'd all give each other 6 albums. Birthday and Christmas money, you see, was supplemented by the parents. So each of us was gauranteed of getting at least 24 LPs each year (12 for our birthday and 12 for Christmas). Then, if we had any money left from allowances, we could buy our own throughout the year.

Pretty sweet deal!

Of course, when I was growing up, LPs started out costing like $2. I remember the first LP I ever bought for more than $8. It was a really hard decision and I don't know why I splurged to get it. I had never heard of the band before, but something about the LP...its art, the band's equipment, the song titles, something. It was the album Finest Finger by the Italian prog/space band Sensation's Fix.

The first single I actually bought myself was (This Is Not A) Love Song by PIL. Or maybe I Love You by Yello. Or both. I think it was both.
