Kontakt 3 is not playing nice with Receptor

I bought k3 3 months ago, and direct intalled it and updated the program with no issues. I have been gigging with it constantly ever since. Multis work fine as long as you don't overload the system with giant stacks of instrument samples, and I have multiple instances of k3 in snapshot banks that are happy too. I've imported external samples and created a killer horn section. So to respond to the angry rants of Nonplus:
* multis are not f'd up
* editing patches is not f'd up
* adding multiple instruments (such as 20 in the case of nonplus) from the k3 library to create multis eventually will lead to crashes. So, use less than 10 instruments at a time, and have other vst's take care of the sounds you need.
In all, I'm very pleased with the program, and the library is awesome.

I'm having a hell of a time getting Kontakt 3.5 to work with my new Receptor 2Pro. It crashes the receptor a lot, changing patches from Receptor is impossible, and half the time adding new instruments in the K3.5 interface crashes the whole system. This, combined with the fact that Uniwire seems to not work at all as advertised is leading me to seriously think about returning the unit for a refund.

Frustrating, as I hoped this would be a good way to offload Kontakt & other samplers/synths off my main machine while composing.

For what's it's worth I thought I'd post an update of my situation with Receptor 2/Konakt 3 (komplete 5 actually). After a week of fiddling with this thing, trying to get Komplete 5 installed properly with all the updates (not easy as the installer wouldn't let me change DVD's during the install process) I've finally got a working stable system! I am currently running Akoustik Piano, 4 Kontakt 3 instances with 5-8 instruments in each, Reaktor FX and 1 Absynth instance with NO dropouts or hang ups of any kind. I can pretty much play a whole orchestra at once if I want to. Wow.

FYI I'm sequencing with DP6 on a Macbook (almost 3 years old) with 2GB RAM, using 7 Uniwire VST instances to send MIDI to Receptor 2 Pro, taking audio from the Receptor over ADAT optical cable to my 828MKii and back into aux tracks in DP6.

Tips for anyone else out there struggling with a similar setup:
- Don't use Uniwire for audio, there's a known issue with DP6 & Logic 8 when trying to get audio back from Receptor over Uniwire.
- Make sure you have the latest Receptor system & Uniwire system updates installed. I mistakenly assumed by system would have the most current updates since I bought it last week, but it turns out I was one build behind on both the Receptor and Uniwire system software. This made a huge difference for me.

Back to work now, couldn't be happier with this setup!!

Hi jonhawes808,

It sounds like you have a serious orchestra there! Can you elaborate on what sample libraries and samples you are running under the 4 instantiations of K3 and how you are setup? EG: are the strings stacked or on separate MIDI channels, etc. etc.? What is you controller? Areyou using Multis, Snapshots or Sources?

BTW, did you say you are running a Receptor 2 or Rev C.?

Hi Phil -

I'm on a Receptor 2 Pro with an an M-Audio Axiom 61 as a controller. I have strings, winds, brass & percussion on 4 separate receptor channels. On each channel I have a mix of VSL (Kontakt 3) and Garritan Personal Orchestra libraries. I mostly use keyswitched patches from either library and haven't stacked much from both libraries beyond the violins. I use one MIDI channel per part, vlns 1, vlns 2, vla, celli etc.

I did remove all the reverb inserts from the VSL patches and opted to use a convolution reverb in Digital Performer instead. This helped a lot with CPU load as each VSL patch contains its own convolution reverb!

Still working this all out, but couldn't be happier at the moment!

One thing I have noticed since upgrading from K3 to K3.5 is that to run large piano libraries within K3.5 (eg PMI Emperor, Black Grand etc), I now have to set the buffer at 128 or 256, otherwise I get pops and clicks. With K3 I could use 64 samples without problem . (Using a Receptor 2 Pro)

Did kontakt 3.5 come installed on your receptor 2? I have k3 on my revc and received an e-mail from NI that I could update to kontakt 3.5.
According to Muse, Kontakt 3.5 is unstable on my receptor rev c, so I did not install it. Are they shipping the new receptor 2 with kontakt 3.5 pre-installed? If not, you should see if you can get 3.5 uninstalled and install K3.

Upgrading to Kontakt 3.5 has brought saving multis to a halt for me. It takes several minutes to do so. Even with just one patch of strings.

R2Pro MAX (should be able to handle it)

I installed K3 on Receptor 2Pro myself, so I'm not sure what version ships with the Komplete edition of Receptor. I have no problems with K3.5 saving multis, it's actually faster than before.

Phil - I am able to run Akoustik Piano at 64 buffer size, but when I add more plugins I need to bump it up to 128 to get good results.
