Yeah, the usual sh!t pic, ...in it's defense, it's not quite that ugly in the flesh! :hihi: .... oh, and it's free! ... there, looks better already eh?

Not a lot to explain really, its a bank of 12 sample players assigned to the keys 'Z,S,X,D,C,V,G,B,H,N,J and M' on your computer keyboard .... although it will respond to the equivalent keys on a piano keyboard.

The plug comes loaded with 12 x 16 bit samples rendered from sfxr during a recent One Synth Challenge, but you can load your own 16 bit mono or stereo samples.

This is the basic version, so each key/sample has only Volume and continuous pitch ( +/- 2 octaves ) controls, and routing via a choice of 2 LFOs, and output via a choice of 3 Filters, an ADSR, or direct.

I'm sure everone has samplers galore, so why use QwertySam?

*The obvious use for such a plug is a custom drum machine .... load in twelve drum samples, and there you have it! ... A kit controllable from the piano roll ... with a few quirks!

*Preset 3 will demonstrate a more subtle ( or wacky ) possibility ... a broken, or slightly eccentric instrument where the same sample is loaded to each slot, but certain notes have a bit of err, ... a life of their own?? :hihi:

*With a bit of imagination, this plug could be a nice way of doing things economically. If you have no plans to change the pitch of your drums, and use only a few bass notes on a track, then here you can have drums, bass, and probably a few more sounds all tweakable and automatable in one panel.

*Qwertysam 1 is extremely easy on CPU, and only your chosen samples will change that.

* ... the best reason ... it's great fun! Load one instance, and from one piano roll, or one set of keys, you can quickly create unique, insane loops ... and then you can bend them in daft ways! :hihi: ( and you can render them out as 16 bit samples and load them ... and... :-o )

Not enough?? ... well, a more developed version is almost complete ... ( additional S/H mod options, extra EQ and delay in line with the ADSR route, range and scaling options for tuning, a Les Dawson piano preset, global tuning, half decent skin, and possibly more ...)
Another version will be created with those same additional features, but will be active across the 'Q' to ']' keys .... thats half an octave more!
...but you cant have either unless you enter a One Synth Competition! :)

Anyway, if you want to give QwertySam1 a try, simply click on one of the links below in my sig, go to the 'Vst synths' folder, and use your alphabet! :)

Tested in FL8 and Tunafish .... info welcome re. performance in other hosts.

Have fun!

Oh, and if you want to have a listen, there are a couple of short mp3s here ....

Ignore the .dll ... its an earlier version, or have it if you want ... if you like that retro SE default look :hihi:

Here is a short instance of something made by the QwertySam1, employing guitar samples:

Mrblitz000, thanks very much for your support... in the early testing, and for the mp3s you've posted ... cool! :tu:

Heehee ... I'm having a lot of fun with this thing! ....here's another mp3 demo of QS1 ....One instance .... kik, snare, 2 hats, cymbal, 5 x bass notes, and 2 noises ..

There are a lot of directions you could take this in as well. I get get so many ideas at once that they all start cancelling one another out.

I've wondered about:

In order to save free up screen space, take out the mod/output buttons per channel (lose flexibility) and make them global (gain screen space). Then, with the extra space, implement a 2nd or even 3rd 'octave' or bank of capability. Or maybe you could retain the controls as they are, and add additional banks with a bank-changing button.

Retaining the computer keyboard input idea, maybe (one of) the additional bank(s) could be controlled by F1-F12.

If you went global with the mod/output controls, maybe allow switching of the order that the filters/eq/envelope are, in the signal path.

It's right about there in the thought process that I realize that this thing totally rocks, as it already is. Any changes mentioned above might actually be speaking of a different VSTI altogether.

(Here's a question; an aside: Would it be possible to develop an interface which does a batch loading of samples, and inserts them in a sort of table; then individual samples in the table could be tweaked by key/note parameter? You know, if the sample load dialog box had multi-select capability, and then the VSTI dropped them into individual slots as best it could?)

Thanks Again!

Cheers again mrblitz000 ... a lot of ideas/questions there :hihi: ... I dunno if I can answer them all, cos I only got the idea about a week ago, and my head is flying around in much the same manner as yours!

The global stuff you mention is where I'm going re. the updated versions, but not yet at the expense of the individual sampler controls. But I can tell you for sure that screen space is indeed an issue :hihi:

Anyway, you've entered the One Synth Comp, so very soon, you will get at least one of the updated versions with too many features to fit on one screen! :help: .... from there, I can cut down to whatever you want really.

One feature I have included in the 'deluxe' 18 sample version, is a switch which changes the active keys from/to 'Z to T' to 'Q to ]' ... and the only good reason I can come up with for doing that is for anyone wishing to use the whole keyboard across two instances, and needs to remember which keys relate to which samples .... but it's early days yet :hihi:

Thanks for your input though, I'll certainly chew it over a bit. :)

Hey mrblitz000, I made a good bit of progress on the OSC versions today, thanks for your help and comments .... if, you dont mind, I'll PM you when I have what I'm aiming towards, ... with a view to sending you a copy in advance.
I would be glad to hear your ideas and comments before I declare it finished and offer it as a prize. :)

QwertySam1 is already quite useful. I went through perhaps 2 dozen 'drum sampling/sampling' VSTIs last evening; and for ease-of-use and functionality, QwertySam1 one was right up there with the top 3 or 4 of them.

A few of the others which immediately stood out:

Loopazoid; fast and easy loading of up to 48 individually-triggered samples, but no filter/envelope/eq.

Jagosampliz; load up a single sample and have it nicely extrapolated across the keyboard. ...probably better for instrument samples other than drum.

Bigbadabom; 24-channel sampler.

The overall, 'sampler concept' is really cool.

One of the earlier-mentioned things which sets QwertySam1 apart is its built-in computer keyboard control.

(by all means, let me know if/when you would like to have a later iteration of QwertySam1 looked over)

Cheers again mrblitz000 :) .... thats high praise indeed!

Careful with those compliments though, some might suspect you're my sock puppet :hihi:

The PC-keyboard triggering doesn't appear to work in energyXT 1.4, though I was able to trigger it fine from the piano roll. I was thinking this would be a great way to have a few samples set up for triggering randomly here & there in a live setting.

Yeah synthgeek, the live sample bank option was one of the considerations when I thought to build it ... it works Ok in Savihost, so its easy to set it up and jam along independent of your main host.... or on a spare old laptop.

Post

I'll try it in Bidule too when I have a chance... wouldn't be any huge deal to make the switch, I do most of my live sequencing in my K2000, and just use the laptop as a way to fit more synths & effects in a much smaller space. :) I'll keep you posted.
