Dear Anyone.

I've got a legit, full copy of HarpTime. I'm plugging it into QSE Elite 2 by Sionsoft. My motherboard's a Gigabyte GA-M5TGM-52G with an AMD Athlon Processor.

Now when you enter a note into QSE Elite, it plays back straight away. All of my other plug-ins play their note and you can enter the next right away. HarpTime freezes the whole computer solid until the note finishes playing. So if it's a 4-beat note, the computer dies for 4 seconds. If you play a whole piece back written with HarpTime, the WHOLE PC freezes like a popsicle while the piece is playing. When the piece finishes, SOMETIMES you get control back. SOMETIMES you have to press Reset. I've tried taking all other plug-ins out and just using HarpTime and it STILL freezes the machine solid, so I know it's not anything else. Imagine having a guitar which only lets you strum the next string when the previous string has stopped vibrating and you'll see how ANNOYING a 4-second delay can be!

Now I know it's easy to blame the processor - it's not the world's greatest - but that processor runs GTA-IV no probs at all. And I don't have a separate graphics card! So I'm of the personal opinion it's not the processor, unless anyone can tell me differently.

It's a great sound. It's just it's gonna get renamed RefundTime if I can't use it without it freezing my computer every note. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm sorry this has been posted in 3 forums now. I'm NOT trying to boost the post or whatever that sin's called. I've only just been given this forum to post it in.

Yours hopefully

No problem, I deleted the extra post in DSP. If you like I'll delete the other too, but it has a reply. Here it is:
whyterabbyt wrote:what speed/kind of AMD Athlon is that? I cant find any reference to your motherboard anywhere to check what it supports. anyways, if its an older Athlon, its possible Harp Time uses an instruction set like SSE2 that it doesnt have.

I'd also try HarpTime out on a different host, in case its a specific issue with the host you're using. QSE Elite isnt anything Ive ever heard of, so its possible its VST support isnt as good as other packages.

mmh do you have your daw and the games installed on the same computer?

Someone a day tell me that instal games, internet and DAW on the same computer could lead to instable configuration...maybe it's wrong or it's right, but since i have a computer for music and another for internet, it don't crash anymore.

maybe?...

Do you use Asio for all ? how does it load your proc? and what is your daw? Do you use Dxi , Vst ....?

Post

Dear Hivkorn.

Good idea of yours, that. So I uninstalled both my games (GTA-IV and Halo)and then uninstalled all my music software and reinstalled it (all the plugins are just DLLS you drag'n'drop into the plugins folder in QSE (Quick Score Elite).

I've never managed to make QSE work with any kind of ASIO, you just don't get any sound coming out of it. So I can't say anything about Asio for all, sorry

But even with the games uninstalled (and I use Total Uninstall 5 to make certain everything goes) I get the computer-freezing-on-every-note thing going on. Like I say, it's the only plug-in that does this and I've got about 20.

If anyone has any more ideas...

Yours apologetically

check your direct X version , and what are you using as soundcard?

Post

Maybe you would benefit from an old non SSE optimized version, later I will send you that

Post

Dear Hivkorn and NuSofting.

Hivkorn, should have said, my soundcard is an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 with all the latest drivers. I've got the legacy drivers too, could try those.

Dear NuSofting.

I'd happily try a non-SSE Optimised version - wish I knew what SSE meant, but there you go! (I'm NOT the world's greatest computer guy!) Thank you very much for answering this.

If the soundcard makes you think of anything else, feel free to say!

Yours respectfully

Hi, Luigi. If you want to send me old version, I might be able to use it for experimenting. No problem if you don't want to send. I own Harp Time and Modelonia, very fantastic instruments!

Dear Musical Gym.

Do you find HarpTime freezes your computer too? If not, do you think it's because my motherboard or processor aren't fast enough? Or is 1gig DDR2 not enough to run it - it runs complete plug-in synths (Proteus X) O.K., but I know some plug-ins are very memory/processor intensive. Is HarpTime one of those?

Sorry about all the questions!

Dear Hopefully,

In the event you want to quickly clear up this most terrible dilemma, I would like to take all your Harptime worries away for a mere $15, if that's allowed under the licensing agreement.

Loving you cheaply,

Dear ulrichburke,

Do you try your plug in with another DAW?

I don't think I have problems with Harp Time. I have 1 gig memory with 2.66 ghz processor Pentium D and use it in FL Studio. I was just curious about the old version.
If I encounter problems that may assist in helping, I'll try to remember to post further thoughts. So far it seems fine.

Even although the OP has completely ignored my question about his processor, Ive installed the demo of the software he's using and tested it with HarpTime, and it works perfectly on my Core2 laptop, despite the exceedingly primitive VST handling of the host.
Thus Im pretty much of the opinion that his system is the problem, be it his processor or perhaps the OS. But Harptime DOES work in that host, so his negative review here has no verifiable basis.
In fact his review seems to be based more on unconscionable pique than anything else. He gives it a '1' for presets but the very primitive host he's using seems to be missing any means of changing presets in the first place. He also refers to Harptime being an .exe rather than a .dll, which is completely false; the .exe provided is SaviHost, and the provided documentation explains that.
An idiot on Set Theory:

Hi ulrichburke,

may be such a negative review is not necessary?

I think I replied to your e-mail within 24 hours, don't I?

Anyway I'm now preparing another build of the plugin to send you,
also don't forget that you may ask for a refund,if you need that.
Of course I hope to solve your issue so that you can use HarpTime.

HarpTime doesn't need much RAM, and the CPU usage is moderate.

Thanks whyterabbyt for checking the host.
Thanks to the others too

Dear Nusofting.

First of all, apologies for the review - I was just putting what it was doing to my computer. I didn't mean to start all this up. Yes, you did reply, yes, I should have been nicer - I DID say the sounds themselves were good - but I retract the overall tone as it doesn't seem to have caused the same probs. with anyone else. Which is puzzling - maybe it's discovered a fault in my computer that I didn't know about. I don't know. With computers, you're always in the dark as you can't SEE what's wrong with them, unlike any other kind of machine. A bust computer looks the same as a fully working one on the surface. It wasn't based on pique so much as based on my experience of it. If you got a piece of software that made your own particular computer crash all the time, regardless of how well it worked on other people's computers (not forgetting you can only judge on your own experiences) how highly would you rate it? Annoyance, yes, granted. Pique - no.

As far as QSE being primitive goes, it's a notation package that handles plug-ins. It's the ONLY notation package I've found that handles plug-ins AND is easy/intuitive to use in itself. HarpTime sounds good, it's just the freezing issue that, thus far, seems limited to my machine(!)

Missed the post about the processor. I've got an AMD Athlon Processor and an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard - sorry I didn't put that. My fault.

All I meant with the question I asked Musical Gym was, if he said how his comp. was set up, I could re-set mine up to match his and see if the problem went away then. I'm not a comp. expert, just a fairly well-schooled user.

Thanks everyone for all your help, I'm very touched, I didn't mean to start all this up! If I've missed anyone, just howl at me.

ulrichburke.
