Zebra not found in Reaper project...Solved

This is beginning to bug me quite a bit. I'm sure it is something I have done but I cannot seem to stop it from happening.

I have several projects in Reaper where I use Zebra (latest beta version installed) and every time I start up Reaper it fails to find Zebra. I manually point Reaper to the location, clear and rescan the VST's so it knows where the dll is, load up the Zebra instrument into the tracks where it is in use and save the Reaper project.

Next time I open up Reaper it forgets where the hell Zebra is again... :?

I have tried to delete all the files associated with Zebra and reinstall it but that does not seem to make a difference. I cannot seem to delete everything that is associated with Zebra because it retains the registration when I do the reinstall (presumably retained in the registry somewhere).

Thing is, I do not have this problem on my Laptop (running Vista with the same latest version of Reaper as on my PC using XP).

I'm thinking I have Zebra set up wrong and there are conflicting dll's or something but I can only find one dll listed when I search.

Has anybody had this problem ? Am I just being a numpty (probably) and have knacked the configuration for Zebra somehow...

Any suggestions welcome.

Edit: Have to vacate KVR land for the night, so unfortunately I will be unable to reply until tomorrow night (UK time)

Hmmm, maybe try the pre-installed version from Zebra's downlaods page (below normal Win version) and see what happens...

Works 100% fine here for me on Reaper 3.2, but I'm on XP. It sounds like Reaper's config is messed up somehow...

The pre-installed Receptor version is found ok... :?

I put it in exactly the same place as the 2.5.7 beta (removed that and placed in another folder away from Reaper scan).

I have tried re-installing the previous version 2.5.6 beta (removed the Receptor version first) because I thought it might be the latest beta and Reaper having some sort of conflict. Anyway, same problem, Reaper is not finding Zebra again.

Is there a way of completely un-installing Zebra (Reg code and all) ? Or does anybody have any other ideas about tackling this.

Vista laptop with Reaper 3.12 and Zebra 2.5.6 is ok
XP PC with Reaper 3.12 and Zebra 2.5.6/7 is not ok
XP PC with Reaper 3.12 and pre-install 2.3 Receptor Zebra is ok.

Very puzzled at what is going on... :?

Just try this:

- backup your presets ;)

- delete anything Zebra in C:\Progam Files\u-he\ (if you only have Zebra, delete the whole directory)

- install pre-installed version

- install beta on top of that (it recognizes the pre-installed folder and puts its stuff there automatically)

How does that go? :)

Thanks for the suggestion/help Urs, but unfortunately it doesn't work.

The Receptor version is ok, but after I install beta (2.5.7) in to the same place, Reaper does not find it again.

I am just going to try 2.5.4 to see if that works (although I thought I was using 2.5.6 ok before yesterday...)

Get back in a few minutes...

Just tried version 2.5.4 with the same result, not found in Reaper.

Very strange... :?

Indeed...

Do you maybe have another Zebra2.dll in some other Vstplugins directory?

Post

I've previously gone through a find files in drive C looking for Zebra2.dll and only the one comes up as found in the folder;

C:\program files\vstplugins\u-he

This is the folder it's always been in.

I'll keep trying a couple of ideas, but first I need some brain food.

Same here! Later :)

Just updated my Laptop to Reaper 3.12 full release version and Zebra 2.5.7 with no problems.

Can it be something messed up with the folders on my PC ? Although, I certainly don't remember changing anything between 2.5.6 and .7

I'll keep looking...

Ok...now this getting really weird :?

I was mucking about with one of my projects in Reaper and I thought I would try something a bit off the wall.

If I move any tracks with Zebra 2.5 blah blah to a track number higher than 3 (i.e I cannot have Zebra on tracks one, two or three) Zebra is found ok

If anybody with Reaper and Zebra 2.5 is looking in on this, can you try opening a project with Zebra on either of the first 3 tracks to see if you can replicate what I am seeing. (Windows XP and Reaper version 3.12 in use, although I did roll back to 3.06 to check that out and it seemed to do the same fault)

If you can't, then I guess it is some esoteric setting in Reaper that I have unwittingly set up. If you can, it's a bug of some sort I guess.

At the moment, if I just move all my Zebra 2.5.7 instances down the track numbers to 4 and higher Reaper loads them fine.

Ouch, my head hurts...

Post

My default Zebra test/play preset is only a single track with ReaComp as a limiter, nothing on the master bus. This opens just fine on 3.12 with Z2 2.5 latest beta. I don't see the 3+ track problem at all.

You might consider backing up your program files\reaper directory, then uninstalling reaper, deleting anything stale left there, then re-installing and just set up vst scanning. That might tell you if it's something going on with reaper/your config.

I hope you nail it, bugs like those can drive one mad...

Thanks for the info bmrzycki.

At least now I know its my set up of Reaper. I'll try your suggestion to see if I can clear the problem

Thanks for your help Urs.

My head still hurts though...
