Oh, also, just for grins, in case nobody's mentioned it yet:

Absynth 4 for $125.

Sounds like a good deal Greylion. I believe that stuff is windows xp only isn't it? if so, that's probably why they might be closing it out.

It's the Emulator X for $50. This includes version 1 of the software and the soundcard and its daughtercard. From all the reviews, it's a really excellent pair of cards.

You can also get the upgrade to Emulator X2 for another $48.

http://www.amazon.com/Creative-CP-EX2-U ... &sr=1-1161

No tax and free shipping on both. You have to have X1 for the X2 upgrade to apply.

I've resisted pulling the trigger on this deal simply because I've already got too many synths and four audio cards.

Incidentally, even though Amazon's listing says there's only one left, it looks like Creative may be the one actually selling it. Makes me wonder if they're cleaning out the warehouse. If they had a $50 upgrade to X3, I'd be all over it myself.

Post

Yeah, it's Windows only, but it's not restricted to XP. I don't know if it will be 7 compatible, but it does work with Vista and XP Pro x64.

If it works with them, you'd think it would be fine in Win7, in compatibility mode if nothing else.

The main thing that makes the software less-interesting for me is that, from what I've read, it wasn't until X3 that it picked up support for multi-core CPUs. Also, X3 is where they detached the software so that you don't need Creative hardware plugged in to make it run. But -- if you're looking for a good card, this is supposed to be a very good one, and the software is also supposed to be excellent, including the DSP effects, though the reviews indicate that the reverb isn't all that great.

Up until I got a faster computer and a UAD-1 card, I used the reverb and it's ok, but you really have to throw some EQ behind to tame some high resonance.

And the card is totally worth 50 bucks, especially if this is indeed a 1st gen card. The later generations didn't have the FW port.

Huh. On a whim, I did a quick search, and this may make the Emulator X bundle even more interesting. It's certainly making me reconsider:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MODO82

It's the E-Mu 1820 AudioDock for $149. It's a breakout box that plugs into the Ethernet port on the 1212m card. A total of $200 for this combo kinda rocks. You get a helluva lot of high-quality ins and outs for that price. It looks like the main shortcoming is that the impedance on the ins is too low for you to DI a guitar signal, so you'd need to have a preamp or DI box in front.

Now, if they'd just come down on the price for an X3 upgrade...

Here's the SOS review on the whole thing, for those who might be interested: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun04/articles/emu.htm

Post

damn, that's a deal. I could not find the audio dock for less than 200 when I was looking last year..
.

-turns out Creative is selling them at that price now...through Amazon.-

Thanks,

For those curious, according to this review http://remixmag.com/mag/remix_applied_acoustics_ultra/ and KVR's database it uses Challenge/Response for copy protection.

I have to pass for this reason, unfortunately.

EDIT: yet that website says "This product is available as an electronic delivery via email 'Serial Number Only'.

So.. I guess I'll have to buy it then.

I just called AudioMIDI and the links won't actually be working (i.e. where you can make a purchase) for another hour or so. They said it should be up by 6pm PST (-8 GMT).

There's more information on UltraAnalog including a couple of audio demos at AppliedAcoustics web site:

I'd check further, some companies give you a serial that gets you into the process of authorising it, you then still have to do the whole C/R tango...

Sound Forge for instance.

it is a challenge and response authorization.
