well, to be fair, he's not really talking about quality as an absolute, but in terms of two sets of results on exactly the same gear. talking about what the gear is, isnt actually that relevant to that.

Look people, I am not trying to stir up any controversy nor was I influenced by the nonsense of Villafabio or whatever. Did not even see the article until today, I would just like concrete answers from the experts in the audio software field.

Being an Audio Production student at this time, I would like to learn more on the topic of DAWs and their programming (engine, processing - whatever you want to call it) possibly affecting the lossless formats in any way or affecting the output of sound generators/soft-synths/samplers etc.

I will be running some tests next week, but all feedback is welcome!

Are we really on page 2 and no one has said that there is no such thing as a software DAC? By definition, such a thing is impossible. No DAW application/host/audio editor has a DAC. The ones and zeros get converted to analog voltage in your sound card.

As far as "audio engines" are concerned, there is no difference in how one applications adds two or more signals together. There may be a difference between methods used to convert sample rate, dither, timestretch or further process audio but that has nothing to do with one applications ability to record, playback or sum audio together v. another.
