Urs wrote:Zebra2.data can now be moved with a Windows Shortcut placed next to .dll (Win only)
Could you please elaborate on this ?
I downloaded this beta, it creates the u-he folder in program files, so i moved this whole folder into the zebra.dll folder (which should be enough to get it to work imho), created a shortcut but it doesn't work.
My opinion is that the plugin should look into it's own folder first for its data, THEN in program files if it doesn't find em. This way there would be no need for shortcut and IT WOULD BE PORTABLE (work from usb key, movable etc).
Cos windows shortcuts don't support relative paths afaik.

Thanks

The Zebra2.data directory is organised differently from the stuff in Program Files. You can't just drag it there.

The installer *first* looks for the existance of a Zebra2.data directory in the install location (Vstplugins\ or Vstplugins\u-he\). If it's there, it'll install into that. So if you already have Zebra2.dll somewhere, simply create a folder called "Zebra2.data", run the installer and you're all set.

The final installer will give you the choice, and it'll follow the shortcut. The current installer doesn't do that yet.

Also, the final Zebra 2.5 (or its installer) will have some code to migrate from the old scheme to the new one.

Don't forget, we're still beta testing :)

Yeah, hmmm. Thing is, even if I re-did Zebra's gui in a similar way (parallel projected 3D), there's no way to tell up front if it'll look as good. In the end, knobs will be smaller and there's simply much more content to be squeezed into that space.
As much as I like the look of the ACE GUI, I'm not sure if it is actually suitable for Zebra in its present form unless it was modified a bit. It works well for ACE, because of its simpler, less cluttered single page interface layout. With as many different kinds of interchangable modules and interface components as Zebra has, I think it's a far too monochromatic color scheme. This is one of the reasons why I like the Dark Horse theme so much. The subtle color coding and sharper contrast serve to guide the eye more easily when scanning through the various modules.

Urs! good news

In FL Studio, When I had an instance of ALCHEMY (camel audio)loaded, for some reason I couldn't add a Zebra because Zebra wouldn't open! It said 'cannot open this plugin. please make sure it was installed correctly). This was Zebra beta 9.

So I tried out Beta 10 just now and Zebra opens just fine with Alchemy, they are now friends!

Weird how they didn't like each other when it was beta 9 :p

Was this one of the 2 crashes you fixed or is this a pleasant surprise? :)

Either way might be it. The possible crashes were really, hmm, almost esoteric. I couldn't even have told you how to get or avoid them.

Thanks for the new beta10. Will install it shortly.

Can this just be installed over the beta09 build, or should we unistall the older version first?
On a Mac.
Thanks,
Michael :)

Urs,

I don't know if this has been mentioned in these 40 pages, or some other 40 pages somewhere, but I notice that if I put VCF 5/6 into the FX grid and set it to formant, then drop another effect in the grid, then click back to the VCF, the labels specific to the formant filter are replaced with the standard cutoff/res/drive. I can click in the filter type menu and just select formant again and it will fix it, but it does it every time I click to a different effect.

I haven't had time to see if it does it in the main grid VCFs, and I've only tested it in Live on my Mac. Anyway.

And of course it has no effect on the sound. :)

How can just one man(Urs) make so much work so fast?!( Uhbik, Zebra2.5, Bazzile, Acesynth...)

I'm rather slow. Some updates take me ages, up to the point of vapourware (Filterscape 1.5 anyone?)

However, I spent a year or two on the design of a plugin engine that accomodates my way of working. For instance, while most developers I know get headaches when they want to add a parameter to an existing plugin (breaks preset compatibility, breaks project automation, involves changes in numerous files of source code), it takes me just two-three lines of code in a single file. Afterwards I can even have the appropriate knob pop up automagically in my gui. So, what normally takes hours, I do in a few minutes.

Also, any improvement to the engine is of course directly accessible to other plugins because they all depend on the same code base (with the exception of the algorithms for modules like osc, filter etc.). That's called "code leverage", and it's accomplished by a very strict object oriented design (which naturally also lends itself to modular plugins).

Due to that I am in the comfortable position to spend *most* of my time on sound quality and feature design whereas normally a developer spends most of his time dealing with logistics and whatever photoshop file the graphics designer passes over.

So nowadays I'm maintaining 45 magware drum machines, 4 plugins in Zebra, 3 plugins in Filterscape, 9 plugins in Uhbik, MFM2, ZebraCM, Triple Cheese, 2 x Podolski (magware edition, Melodyne edition), plus up-to-date legacy versions of Zebra1 and MFM1 for registered users, all without much of a headache. No problem adding some more :)

Very nice!
