If you want to run the mile in competition. Practicing for it by running the 440 and never running a mile is a guarantee you'll fail.

It's a big deal because it's not realistic.
Change your analogy to a marathon and the opposite is true - if you only ever run marathons to practice you'll be too tired to actually run the real thing, but if you run a combination of 5 or 10 miles to practice, you're in great shape for the marathon.

It's a big deal because running marathons to practice for marathons is a guarantee you'll fail :P

Might be fun to have a "get the boot" theme for a month. :hihi:

That's not the point of song writing is it? Let's try to stay real.

So it's to the point when we're talking analogies that involve 'shorter', but not to the point if we use analogies that involve 'longer'? If shorter is better then you just defeated your own argument.

Let's try to stay real.

...of the Moon? I'd reduce it by 100%.

I didn't run the numbers on popular songs that ran over 10 minutes but an educated guess is zero. The average pop song is 3:45. That's real.

I was guessing. I didn't know there was anyone that didn't like dark side... You live you learn.

You didn't count Blue Room by the Orb then? Why not?

But it's not a pop song contest. It's KVR song contest, average KVR contest song is 0:59 (based on last month data).

Give it a rest plz

3 minutes is plenty to write a song with. I could find a bunch of 'commercial' pop songs under 3 minutes.

BTW - does anyone care to address my question or should I just go with whichever way I choose?

Agreed. I'm not sure what's so difficult about that.

Why on earth is anyone banging on about the length of commercial productions (most of which I'd never dignify with the name 'song') ?

Music for me is pure fun. I have absolutely no intention of ever trying to get mine farmed out to the meeja. It would seem to me that if someone was composing for such a market, then they wouldn't be restricting themselves to a themed competition.

I don't have any problem with the contest length whether it be 3 minute, 2 minute or even 30 seconds. To me it's a challenge to stretch myself in different directions and hopefully stop myself from getting in a rut. As well as pushing myself a little it's also great to hear what others can do with the same basic outline.

There has to be a cutoff. If you alow someone to go 10 seconds over the clearly stated time limit, someone else will want to go over by 20 - 30 - 40 - 5 minutes! If you don't think you can work inside the limits given, then leave it till a contest comes along that you think you can engage with.

As a side issue, advertising jingles (which can earn a lot of money with the right connections) usually have very severely controlled time limits and often have to be exactly to the second.

There. I feel much better now
It wasn't me! (well, actually, it probably was) - apparently no longer an 'elderly', now a 'senior'! Is that promotion?

robojam, I run 4 marathons in the morning to warm up for my first coffee. :hihi:

Have you noticed your discussion about song length is getting very long...

Finally I got my song sounding OK, leaving me with the blabla problem.
I have to write an intro to explain why a song about pissing-off is so full of shit... :?

Sayonara,

Max... .. . :P
