I'm using Reaper everyday, but man I really, really, really want/NEED an audio snap/warp feature a la Live or any other major DAW. At this point every big host can do it but Reaper can't and that totally sucks for editing everything from drums to guitar. Incrementally moving the playback speed fader per item is not a work around at all.

You can split items and hold Alt while timestretching the end of one and the beginning of another at the same time. Look at the split points like warp markers you can edit, but not automatically quantise like this.

Every time I see a screenpic of Logic's mixer and/or track view, I'll admit to feeling a bit of DAW envy.

Or simply record it better so you wouldn't need warping at all :P

I like the clean lines of the PT8 GUI ..... but the Logic GUI is just horrible IMO.

There's two play button and a record button, but they're under a layer of bloat. :hihi:
No, that wasn't me.

I also like the look of the new ProTools UI. (though I don't feel quite the same level of DAW envy when I see it)...

I guess we'll just have to have a multi-page argument on who's opinion is more credible. :hihi:

That's what I wanted to say. I think I understand UI quite well. But to each their own as this is highly subjective cause it incorporates workflow.

Indeed. Reaper's UI is fundamentally the same as before, barring a few interesting upgrades with 3.x that are improvements yes but, not on par with standard commercial DAWs imo.

What I don't like specifically is:

1. Menu navigation. The right-click menus are overloaded with options. The organization and naming conventions for features and controls is obscure in many places. Overall, the navigation and layout feels like an afterthought. It's not intuitive to me. They should probably hire a proper user interface designer who understands what "look and feel" REALLY means. You can't just "skin" something to make it better.

2. Standard and uninspiring use of windows components in lieu of custom GUI controls. Logic and the latest version of Pro Tools are great models for good design of controls. Reaper still relies on the OS for controls. It's flat, boring and reeks of an unfinished UI. Well, IMO of course ;) We don't need to run your DAW on a keychain or a Pentium 2 machine. High powered computers and 2GB of RAM is affordable now. Make something nice that is easy to use and attractive. Reaper's design looks like the old Waves plug-ins to me.

3. Workflow. Well, I just don't like it. Matter of opinion really. I do like the IO and routing features though. What they have done with routing is pretty creative but overall, it's too funky for me.

4. Reaper still sucks for looping compared to DAWs like Live. Its REX support is more than a little awkward :?

Overall, Reaper still reminds me of Winamp. Who cares if I can skin it? Give me something professional that looks and feels great to use. But it's all a matter of opinion and taste so there's no need to defend it either way. I agree that in its current state its more for advanced DAW users. If they want to reach a larger market they'll need to overhaul the GUI and come into the new mellinium with the design. But hey, ymmv and imo ;) :)

Holy crap. What I was missing was the fact that I have to hover the mouse between the two items with a split till i see the double sided arrow and then hold alt and drag. I was clicking within the item and it would just drag the full waveform. Just goes to show ya what you mis when you don't fully RTFM....
