I did give it an honest try. I still have my license but I doubt seriously that I'll ever use it again. I never actually moved my work to Reaper because I was never comfortable with it.

I hate the no-tools midi editing and I don't like the interface or workflow. I bought a license thinking I'd wait until the midi editing got better but they ended any upgrade path from my version basically telling me they didn't want me anymore. I took the hint.

I did a few tunes here and there just to see how much trouble it was and although it was doable, god what a pain in the ass.

I've still got 10-12 sequencers but I use XT2 95% of the time. XT2 is not up to doing 100s of tracks and it's not all that feature rich but it's (super) fast and modular. The other 5% I use Cakewalk SHS for stuff like midi-sync.

To even qualify as a sequencer a few years ago midi-sync was necessary. These days midi-sync is a fairly rare feature. It can be found in the least expensive Cakewalk products but not in Reaper.

This is the main thing that's difficult for me. (And I meant I gave it an honest whirl, too, not that I "didn't".)

The whole mouse-drag to get a note is something that seems counter to REAPER's goal of everything being faster and more flexible. If you're doing drum parts with the diamonds view, it's just a huge pain to draw those.

I thought I'd miss the tool and single-click, but it seems to be help workflow to not have to drag every single note to the length you want. I can see how some people would find this a benefit, but it's equally as difficult to others, as well.

Thanks for the support and I understand how this whole topic sounds crazy to those whose needs REAPER fulfills greatly, but for some of us it doesn't facilitate things as well as it could yet.

(And that "yet" seems to be a speedbump in getting things done.)

i use reaper and ableton for live stuff
looking at temper for mor fun midi things.....

The two things I really would like for MIDI in Reaper:
Groove Quantise
Right clicking on a midi track would have the option of inserting a midi event.

Can you not do the 2nd one by customisaing the context menu?

Possibly. There is just a lot of need to customize things that intuitively should be convenient, but there are a bunch of built in things on right-click that do not seem to be as urgent. It makes me feel stupid. I get enough of that from my children.

The right-click marquee selection is another one that baffles me. Despite my attempts to try and get used to it, the fact that I use left-click marquee selection in every other windows application* (including windows itself) makes this particularly annoying. Why this isn't an option (when options in Reaper are ten a penny) is beyond me.

Anyway, I decided this week to stop testing Reaper and just accept it's not for me. It's awesome if you're doing tons of audio tracks and single stereo-out VSTi, but for more orchestral composition, I'm glad I invested in Cubase. I don't feel like I'm fighting the software...

I tried to like Reaper for ages, but concluded that even though it should be ideal for me, it just doesn't and won't ever feel right.
I was a converted flstudio user, but now I'm back on Cubase (biiiig jump from atari to 4.5) and it's ticking all my boxes.

I would only have toughed it out with Reaper if 1: I was broke and 2: They implemented a proper vst freeze function.

I'm not a hater, though. It's all personal choice.
How good something is for the next man/woman is immaterial unless it aids me.

I left Reaper for a few minutes to try Sonar and then EnergyXT2.5, and after the snap-crackle-and-pop-crapfest of those two (on two lowly audio tracks, on top of that) I came back to my senses

If I leave Reaper for any period of time it will be to learn Cubase (for midi), but Reaper will always be my go to standby for recording audio (with some midi sprinkled in). I guess some people prefer eye candy/"workflow" to actual basic audio functionality.

Can you use an audio track as an LFO to modulate a plug in parameter sitting on another track in Cubase, hm?

But seriously, I think you're a bit defensive for no reasons; that Yatmandu say app "x" has all the audio feature he needs does not necessarily means app "y" is lacking.
