You know, there are people arguing over the differences between the new SEM and the old SEM as well. Crazy stuff. :)
I just wished that he would have included MIDI in the CV/GATE version. 8)

I used to own one. Never really missed it. Except now cause I had paid 50$ for it and now they go for an insane price... really, I do not see the point, my P08 has much nicer strings.

never heard this one, has some good reviews going, but also reports of units that can't keep in tune...
this is my main gripe about those old vco polysynths, SOME ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO TUNE... they detune across the keyboard, or one osc against another, or one voice against the others... they have tuning pots but many old synths are out of range and can't be tuned right anymore. I had many like that. Notably a Jupiter8 nobody ever tuned right. I sold it to a guy who taught could do better but years later he told me it was impossible. So THE SAME units are re-sold over and over again. These are the faulty ones. Good luck getting your hands on a good one. On the other hand my cs-60 was rock solid.
I am late at the game but I would really like a jx-3p with programmer, here is one nice video:
there is one here at 600$...

a very nice one, there are 2 models I had the smaller... multitimbral, velocity (I forgot about aftertouch), inbuilt sequencer, superb sounding arp filter, with incredible resonance, I remember tweaking it for hours holding chords...ghettosynth wrote:Chroma Polaris
the problem: they have a membrane switch interface with thin plastic ribbons that dry up and break with time, they must be all dead or on the verge of dying by now

It's obviously a very subjective thing. But I really love that string sound on the RS-505. I could probably get close on my DSI TETR4 with a bit of work. I guess part of it is the appeal of owning something as old as I am that looks like it's from another time. The fact that it probably won't work properly is neither here nor therewaveriderarts wrote:I used to own one. Never really missed it. That's one of the reasons I went for a brand new DSI TETR4 instead of a golden oldie. Can't really be arsed with all that! It's also the reason everyone started chucking there's out with the advent of digital synths & why you were able to get your Roland RS-505 for $50 (jeez, imagine the bargains we could have picked up back then?!waveriderarts wrote:never heard this one, has some good reviews going, but also reports of units that can't keep in tune... this is my main gripe about those old vco polysynths, SOME ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO TUNE... they detune across the keyboard, or one osc against another, or one voice against the others... they have tuning pots but many old synths are out of range and can't be tuned right anymore. yeah back in 93 I bought a museum sized amount of gear for next to nothingDogboy73 wrote: why you were able to get your Roland RS-505 for $50 (jeez, imagine the bargains we could hav epicked up back then?!). I suppose if I had the patients, know how, time, money & space for a classic old analogue beasty I'd have one. Unfortunately I don't have any of those things
jupiter4 50$ also. Tr808-909-cr78-sh2(x2)-csq600(x2) for peanuts. also CS60 rhodes polaris, korg monopoly, juno-6, paraphonic 505, jupiter8 (never worked), sh1 (out of tune, unreparable), moog prodigy, and I must forget some. Oh and if I had any real money at the time there were minimoogs for $400 and P5s and everythnig analog for quite cheap.
2 years later I sold everything at profit for bad reasons
today I build a hardware studio out of cheap 90's digital gear -future classics nonetheless -Nord Modular1 rack, JP8080 +some dsi stuff +mfb + elektron monomachine
well if you want that 505 -I remember mine stayed in perfect tune

I got one of the new SEMs, and my Kenton Pro 2000 mkII works just fine with it. No point in running the cost up even higher with a built-in MIDI interface.eXode wrote:You know, there are people arguing over the differences between the new SEM and the old SEM as well. Crazy stuff.
I just wished that he would have included MIDI in the CV/GATE version.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

No. Much better to run up the cost with the need to buy a seperate one!deastman wrote:I got one of the new SEMs, and my Kenton Pro 2000 mkII works just fine with it. The Chorus & Ensemble sections on those old string synths make a huge difference to the sound. You can hear it in the demos when it is brought in. That's when the real magic starts to happen. It's a great sound but unless I could find a bargain priced string synth it's probably not worth it. Maybe I'll try the GMedia Virtual String Machine or stick the TETR4 through a nice chorus effect with loads of modulation on the patch ..... probably still won't get close to that authentic string sound though.ghettosynth wrote:I think quite a bit of work. Someone may like the Tetra strings more but you won't get them to sound the same. The 505 has a BA662 based filter not unlike many other Roland synths of the same era as well as a great chorus/ensemble effect. It's also fully paraphonic which, although you may not value, you won't get that out of a TETRA either.Dogboy73 wrote: It's obviously a very subjective thing. I suppose that you don't want to hear about the 808 that I turned down....for $50.

Absolutely. You know when bob Moog starts doing seminars for CMI Fairlight that something is up! (excellent video actually. well worth watching.)ghettosynth wrote: I'd say that polyphony, midi, and most importantly, the digital sound starting with FM and continuing on with sampling where what really drove the shift.
Synthesizers actually sounding like real instruments always seemed to be a goal of the big name synth manufacturers for electronic instruments. Analogue synths just seemed to completely fall out of fassion for a while there ..... then they got popular again & prices skyrocketed to stupid levels! The quality of the piano patch has always been a key factor in driving keyboard sales.
