Here's where you lose me again. I'm not talking about "synth music." I'm talking about rock music, with the feel of real rock music. I should have specified that I was talking about music that makes sounds that aren't supposed to really sound like synths, but "fake" guitars and basses.

Some of them even use samples towards this end. I agree that for some radio rock band, you won't have that kind of freedom. But let's not make those examples apply to everything, "end of story." Because it doesn't apply.
I'm sorry if I confused you. But in the case of synth music, anything can form the spine of the music. You can use any synthesizer to generate the bass, lead, chord, harmony parts.

Samples, on the other hand, well, that's a different matter altogether. For acoustic and guitar instruments, it's so hard to get anything remotely close to realistic from stringing static samples together.

On the other hand, you can do ANYTHING with synths, when you're writing music. That's why I use Omnisphere and RMX. But when you're writing music with guitar and bass, you'll need either the real instruments themselves or very VERY good virtual equivalents (surprise surprise, there are none because samples are useless at creating realistic guitar parts and Mokafix has a solution that will be of enormous importance in this regard).

And never confuse guitar sound with guitar performance. They are two almost entirely different things even if they are ever so related. Guitar sound - that's not a problem. If you want to do simple melodies with single picked notes, that's okay, because you can do that with samples. Guitar performance and string behaviour, on the other hand, is why physical modelling is really the only way to achieve realism. Ever tried doing truly realistic slides, hand noises, fret noises, buzzing, squeaks, bends, etc with samples?
Nah, you can't get buzzes, fret noises, and a lot of extended technique the physical instrument has.

But while you're stuffing up your guitars and basses, you can do other things to be expressive with your samples. You have a lot more leeway with certain genres, but rock and folk can't be completely thrown in there. Even good folk has the elasticity to piss off traditionalists and use stuffed up samples to creative use.

Just to reiterate. I'm not talking about using your laptop to make "synth sounds," but stuffed up guitar and bass sounds.

The Prominy demos are indeed absolutely fantastic in terms of "virtual guitar".
But, two things to consider (one just being my opinion):

- In order to properly play/program those kinda things, you gotta know how guitar playing works, otherwise things will never be convincing. It's almost so much you gotta know that you could as well learn to play guitar (maybe you even have to learn a little guitar to make full use of the Prominy stuff).

- Even the Prominy stuff IMHO (this is the opinionated thing) falls short when it comes to anything such as "side effects". Things such as string noise, slides, vibratos, slurs, bends, differently muted notes and the likes come to mind. Hence a Prominy guitar performance will sound more or less predictable. Now, this may or may not be a good thing. In something like a "clean" production (which could as well be pretty heavy, I'm not talking about sounds here), it might be very welcomed. Riffs will be accurate, always in time, etc. But, otoh, by losing a certain amount of unpredictability, you may as well lose what's required to make certain sorts of music "ring".
More or less "dirty" funk guitars, somewhat "interactive" bluesy stuff, rough rock riff work, crazy string bendings (especialy those when you play two strings but only bend one of them), intense, varying vibratos, "scratchy" single note riffs - these are the things I haven't heard from any programmed guitars yet. And I'm sure it'll still take quite some while to come until we're there. If you don't need any of this in your music, fine. In that case emulations can already do quite a great job.

Fwiw, I think that in the end, a hybrid approach will be the way to go. Something such as a mixture of:
1) Plain old proper sampling.
2) Physical modeling.
3) Prerecorded phrases, patterns, chords and what not that could then be tweaked in a Melodyne DNA fashion.

Gotta be quite some work to put all of them together in one attractive interface that doesn't require a degree in quantum physics to make it sound great. And it'd probably still take some guitar playing knowledge to get more or less convincing results.

Just felt samples needed a bit of help in this thread.
In fact I'm almost certain those guys can play real guitars, and play them well, just like you said.
But hey, show me something even remotely on that level done with current modeling. :shrug:
And even if there were something, the need for knowledge would remain.

Whatever one's opinion on this, I can tell you right now, whatever Mokafix releases I can guarantee you it will NOT suck.

That's why many are waiting for his guitar and bass. The reason they are waiting is because they know everything he has released so far has been exceptionally good. And his guitar and bass will follow suit.

And being a perfectionist, he will undoubtedly produce plugins that will surprise even the most jaded musicians.

It shouldn't surprise you then, that I am prepared to wait quite some time, perhaps even another 5-10 years, for his virtual string instruments, if that's what it takes.

Perhaps in that time frame, other players will enter the field (and they surely will) and release instruments. Mokafix isn't the only game in town when it comes to physical modeling, but of course, in my opinion he is the only guy, apart from Moddartt/Pianoteq, who has produced highly realistic models of real instruments.

Once again, whoever said physical modeling was the future of virtual instruments was absolutely correct. Now that CPUs are getting much faster as we speak, even very complex physical models will be able to run quite painlessly on most computers in the future. The good thing about physical models is that unlike dinosaur sample libraries they don't chew up valuable RAM that can be used to store all those important audio tracks that you will be mixing!

As I said earlier, I dream of the day when samples are truly obsolete, and everything is realistically modeled and that the only RAM requirement is the code used to execute those physical models. Perhaps computers will be so fast that we won't need to freeze or bounce tracks, so we'll be able to render things as they are, and then master them when they are mixed down to stereo.

Well, I can only judge what is available right now.
I don't know Mokafix so I can't comment on his work, if he will be able to revolutionize the (virtual) guitar world then more power to him ! :hail:
We need innovative people for sure.
Right now I haven't heard a single modelled guitar part that was closer to the real thing than a kiddie Casio to a Rhodes, sorry.
And the Prominy demos really could fool me.
What's that fixation with RAM, btw ? RAM is cheap nowadays, put in 16GB or even 32GB, who cares ? More than enough for everything this side of Hans Zimmer. :shrug:
And why would I need RAM for audio tracks ?

Just like the Guitar Hero game, you could probably and more cheaply learn some simple guitar more quickly than spending money on the best guitar sample plug and taking the time to learn how to program it correctly and try to make it sound authentic.

It's like going to a party or somewhere and there is an acoustic guitar laying about and random people are picking it up and playing it. Eventually someone who has never played guitar wants to learn a quick easy song and one of the guitar players in the room shows him some easy common chord progressions and simple pop/rock songs. Before the end of the night is over that person is playing "Sweet Home Alabama" or some common G/D/C chord progression over and over again, annoying the hell out of everyone in the room. But hey, he learned some guitar and could now easily incorporate it into a song he is recording. If not at a party with guitar players, just substitute that with youtube.

You would also get better sounding results with a pre-recorded guitar loop/sample library than a VSTI, even if you did not play it etc. Or else it will just sound a bit cheesy and easily identifiable. You will just have to say, yes it is midi guitar and that's what it is and will be. Of course mixed in with other layers of real guitar parts, you might be able to fool some listeners.

Mokafix has some fuzz box emulations and a e-piano. Many releases recently and everything he makes is in my opinion ground breaking. His fuzz boxes are as good as the real thing.
Purchasing Rectifuzz in a few days. The demo got me my dream distortion :D
The guitar model must be someting special judging by the the sound demos on youtube.
