For those of you that didn't know, Eric Woolfson, one of the founding members of Alan Parsons Project and the main singer/songwriter of the band died on December 1st. Here's the info: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituar ... lfson.html

I had a secret project that I was working on trying to reunite some of the original people from APP with Alan for some vocal sampling and possibly some music too... covers, new versions of classics or maybe even a new song although less likely on the last one. But something fun and semi-related to the samples. When we were in London last year we sampled Lenny Zakatek who sang "Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" and "Games People Play". We were then talking to Eric about possibly doing some as well. I think I had heard he was sick and there was some mysterious apprehension. Now I think it's clear why. A shame we didn't get to work with him or do a one off reunion but that's life. A window of opportunity and then it can be gone the next day or month or year. You just never know.

We are still working on an incredible vocal library though and it has Lenny, Roger Manning from Jellyfish, Jason Scheff from Chicago, Simon Collins and a bunch of other great singers including Opera singers, choirs and more. We might get Jon Anderson to do something on it and who knows who else before it's done. We've been working on it for years and it is the one product we were smart enough not to announce! ;) When we do release it we'll dedicate it to Eric Woolfson, a brilliant and perhaps under-rated talent. He had a really cool voice too. He sang the songs "Time" and "Eye In The Sky". Real smooth and Floyd-like. I wish I could have met him in person but I'm glad I at least got to talk to him about the possibility of doing the sample session and possible music tracks. We did record a few APP tracks with Lenny though and one of these days might do something with that. I am trying to do more music to supplement the sound design so it makes more sense why I do all of this sampling... it's not just for you guys to make music! I love it too.

Anyway, this isn't the usual RIP thread. It's in our company forum and I wanted to tell you about our experience with Eric and what might have been.

Sad news to hear of his death. As a big Alan Parsons Project fan growing up, I was aware that Eric Woolfson was a primary songwriter and very important member of the band. I could always distinguish his voice from the other singers used on other tracks.

May he rest in Peace.

Loved ALL those disks which I had on the original LP format. Just last month I downloaded the complete collection in digital format. I ROBOT especially was a game changer for me, both in concept and execution.

Very sad to hear about EW. He will be missed...

I'm so incredibly saddened by this. APP has been a huge influence on my recording and composing, and I always enjoyed Eric voice. His songwriting talent was so incredibly vast. I was hoping Alan and Eric would get back together and record some new material...

That's sad, I missed that news. Big APP fan, Freudiana was excellent as well, and showed the contribution that Eric brought to the Project.

Thanks for highlighting this Dave

Yeah, it was weird how I found out. Someone from Abbey Road (Alan Rousse I believe) had told Ken Scott about it and then Ken asked me if I had to talked to Alan lately. I said "No, why?" and when he told me Eric Woolfson just died I was in a moment of shock. "What? Really????" Besides just appreciating his talent I was actually trying to do a sample library involving both Eric and Alan and other Alan Parsons Project vocalists. I've always felt they had a unique variety of sounds since they used so many different singers. We sampled Lenny and he introduced me via email to Eric. So I had a few emails back and forth with Eric where he was considering it... and part of it was to do some "demos" that were actual music with him singing. I DID record a few songs with Lenny at a studio called British Grove. But we never did with Eric. That window of opportunity now gone forever. Oh well. I tried. I was even bold enough to talk to Alan asking about a possible reunion... which I am sure he's heard a lot. It didn't seem out of the question. They just had to work out some things but life goes on, things change and the same chances are no longer there.

No one talks about a Beatles reunion now that George is gone. It's not as big a deal for Paul and Ringo to get together. These kinds of reunions are nice for them but even nicer for the fans. I'm really glad that Pink Floyd did at least one reunion while Richard Wright was still around. If you think about it we've lost some music greats recently. But their music lives on and there's something to be said for that too.

I didn't want this to be your usual RIP thread. Someone else can do that in another place. This had a bit more to it for me and I wanted to share it with those that frequent the SR forum. A lot of things happen that we don't tell you about. This was going to be a secret until it happened. But now that what is going to happen will not include Eric, I figured at least we could tell you what might have been. Small spec in the grand scheme of things but... I was at least happy to talk to him about all of that stuff. Sad to hear he's gone.
