I posted this first in a different KVR forum but this seems more appropriate.
Hi all. I started using MULab a few weeks ago to record audio, vocals and guitar mostly. I have been unable to access the line-in jack using Mulab, the internal mic is always on. At first I thought the problem was something in my laptop(Dell inspiron 2GB/2MHz, Vista home prem.) But when I downloaded Audacity I found I could indeed use line-in to play my guitar or use an external mike. On MuLab it doesn't matter what I plug into the jack, the internal mike is the recording device. I have chosen the line-in as the default but to no avail. I have tried all the settings I could find on the dell control panel, on the asio4all box (now at default) and on Mulab edit>audio setup but to no avail. Any help with this would be appreciated.

[Omit] - I have read your other post and all the obvious steps seem to have been done there.
I put "dell inspiron internal microphone" into a Google search and it came up with a number of web pages detailing other users having mic problems in general.
It may be worth you looking through those there might be answers there.

Anyway stick with [pljones] he usually comes up with the goods.

Yes, I am using ASIO4ALL.

In general there seem to be a lot of issues with the internal mic and line in. I'll keep looking for solutions there if nothing else comes up.
I think it significant that I can use line in with Audacity but not with MuLab. Perhaps I should try un- and re-installing MuLab. I just upgraded from 2.6.4 to 2.7 though and that changed nothing.

Oops, yeah, missed that.
ASIO4ALL will use WDM device drivers, where available. If there is only a WMME driver for the device, it probably won't show up.

I'm not sure how significant this is but in Audacity Edit>Preferences>Devices>recording I get to choose between the same recording devices listed on my laptop sound controls.
With MuLab it goes Edit>Audio setup>select inputs to a box of 4 toggled boxes marked:MicIn1-MicIn2-MuxedIn1-MuxedIn2.
This leads me to believe that for some reason my sound card isn't fully engaging with MuLab and/or ASIO4ALL. Just because it was easy I Un/Re-installed MuLab and ASIO4ALLL. No change. The sound card (IDT HD Audio CODEC) driver is the latest available.
At this point I'm thinking perhaps to get an external sound card since Ive been told it would be worth doing on it's own merits. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts (actually not such a deal as when that phrase originated) that resolves the problem. I'll post the result.

Audacity uses PortAudio and that in turn appears (in Audacity) to find the MME devices only. In ASIO4ALL, all my MME devices have equivalent WDM devices. In JACK for Windows, PortAudio finds MME, DirectSound and ASIO devices. OK, I found a way around it. I traveled to the local Big box store (they don't deserve free ad so they will remain unnamed. I purchased two items, first a Creative USB sound blaster X-fi Go! external card. I did this in spite of the fact that while googling for answers to my problem I encountered a lot of noise about Creative vs Vista issues. They only carried Creative on their shelves. I asked the "squad" about any problems with Vista but they don't know their sphinctors from the Grand Canyon. After installing the device and fussing about I ended up with a fun way to change my voice to a munchkin's. There did seem to be lot's of stuff on there but trying to use a significant portion brings a message that all features are not available to all systems. More important, no guitar through it's mic/line in jack. Disheartening.
The second item purchased was M-AUDIO keyboard or "Keystudio" as they call it. Included was a 49 key velocity sensitive keyboard (good thing I'm told) with minimum whistles and bells (good for me at this stage), a reduced function copy of their Pro tools M-powered software,(this is going to sit on the back burner til I get to know MuLab and Audacity better) and....YES, another chance! They included their own USB micro audio interface. This one does let me play my guitar through it's line in jack. Works on MuLab and Audacity. So that gives me a work-around.
Oh yeah, the dougnuts, Let's see that one is bluberry, those are the buttermilk and that cinnamon spiral is mine. None for Vista, Creative or Dell though

Hmm.. Creative is not what you'd have had recommended here! 
And that keyboard is pretty basic and has had some bad reviews (basically on reliability, if I remember correctly -- if you're not going to hammer it around gigs, you may see a good life from it). However, having the audio in is a big win!
