It occurs to me that the truly universal symbol for this time of year is the disco ball dropping on NYE. Well, maybe not exactly a disco ball but certainly in the same family of performance-oriented spherical objects ( distinct from yoga / pilates balls or surrealist floating blobs ). A possible contest theme could be to create a patch either analogous to a disco ball, or with a sound associated with a disco ball. At least 1 XY control should have some 'ball' parameters like size, spin, sparkle-tude, etc.

If this idea works for you, please select the first option.

If this idea doesn't fly (or fall, I guess), I'll try and throw some more at this thread and see if anything sticks.

If it does fly, maybe bonus points for pictures of disco balls.

Great idea, but can't we just do some simple thing for a change, like bass, lead or pad.
Maybe limited to certain modules.

I'd still like to hear some scary noises presets.
As a concept patch it would work in the "These days are scary", way.
...or sounds that describe the global economy.

Disco ball? Meh. Too mundane. How about an aural representation of the inner mindscape of the orgasm.

:hihi:

Kind regards.

Sounds cool. Looks like it will be another honorable mention for me! Haha!

Sorry, I can't get inspired by this one (I wasn't inspired by the broken instrument theme either).

Sorry, also, that I can't come up with a constructive suggestion to offer as an alternative.

BTW, I've not heard of disco balls dropping and NYE. My "universal" image of NYE is fireworks.

What sounds does a disco ball emit?
The whirring of the motor that makes the ball spin?
Some very, very, very faint "plink" every time a photon hits one of the mirror faces and gets reflected?
A crash when a disco ball detaches itself from its fixation and hits the floor (or a dancer)?

Not the slightest idea on what to synthesize about a disco ball here.

OK I guess this one is out :D

Simple:
* Hypersupergiganto-saw arps
* Bass balancing act - (at least) one XY control should allow for adjusting sub-by frequencies, and another the balance of everything above that (somehow)
* More cowbell / FM

If nothing seems to stand out by Monday, I'll just go with one of these arbitrarily.

I have a feva! And the perscription is more cowbell baby!

Bass is always nice. :)

FWIW I think that these ideas are a little too specific and/or over complicated.

An over specified task leaves less room for interpretation, which makes it less fun to do. I much prefer themes that allow for much greater lattitude - the geographically located idea that you came up with and MC's Halloween theme are good examples of this.

Here's an idea: everyone who is interested gets to suggest one theme and an open poll is run to decide which to use. It's democratic, so no one can complain, and it removes the burden of choosing from one person.

Post

An open poll is always a great idea.

I personally like the more specific themes as for me it makes it easier to judge the contest entries. I find these more fun than ones with "greater latitude" so again, probably one more reason for a poll.

Post

How's about - I'll run another poll if people submit ideas by Monday, otherwise I'll just set the theme to Bass and make it very clear that ideas are always appreciated, and consistently run polls about future themes on the voting threads.

A 'simple' idea I just wanted to toss out was single percussion pads, this would work with Zebra but also I'm really happy with stuff I've gotten from Bazille/ACE doing this - it just requires immediate freezing to build a whole kit that way, doing it with Bazille would make it accessible (which might be an issue with ACE).

Post

Sorry, ignore my whinging, do what you think's best xh.

FWIW I like MC's horror idea.
