tehlord wrote:Great remix

I prefer it to the original, much prefer it in fact. The weird vocal sound that's chopped up in it about a third the way through is superb, was that part of the remix package?
The remix pack was really cool, it was a bunch of plain "ahhh, eees, and ooohs" at a range of pitches. All the rest of the work is mine through time consuming sampler mapping and multiple effect automation :) The legato melody was the same samples just played differently.
tehlord wrote: The only thing that's bothering me in the mix is the hats and snare. They both seem to be occupying the same space, and smothering the bassline at the same time. A bit of EQ tweaking will most likely fix it but definately needs to be done pre mastering.
Yeah, that's actually deliberate, believe it or not. It's a single sliced funk drum solo I've sequenced and effected to sound like that (re: focused and simple idea based on two elements). I love the way the snare and the splashy hat kinda run into eachother under the meltdown limiting. It's funny, you can actually hear the singer on the original record going "yeah!" on one of the hat slices :) The bass is sidechained to the whole beat (as it's a "single entity"), it may sound like it's comp swallowing the bass but there's actually no gain reduction going on in the mix buss. Probably coming across as a bit of a smartarse here but it's true, honest!

Splendidly done that man 8)
Thanks! REally kind of you to say. VonStroke's own remixes often only involve one or two short references to the source track, he likes to basically create a whole new tune and pass it off as a remix. I do too :)

I assume you've seen the interview with him about the creation of the track? Many hours spent recording vowels apparently!

All so you can come along and make a superior version (in my humble opinion) :hihi:

Heh, I stoled all his secrets.. He went through all his hit tunes track by track. It's a goldmine of good ideas that vid. Changed the way I wrote tunes, starting with this one.

It can't have done. I've seen the threads on this forum and many others saying those tutorials vids are a waste of time and show you nothing

Anyhoo, keep up the great work!

Poly - thanks for the comments. I'll try to make some of the weaker edits a bit stronger + tighter.

Anyone else have some niggles/concerns/advice/praise? Anyone think the tune is a bit too in your face, that it needs some more fluffy-ness?

last bump. have a listen.

My influences for this tune were DJ Shadow, Royksopp, Aphex Twin, and VonStroke. (pinched ideas from all of em, plus a couple of my own :))

hehehhh, sounds like you had a lot fun playing around w/ the chopped up vocals.

I've been enjoying this for a few days now. It's fun, and the sound (to my iffy ear) is very, very good. I really like the way the cymbals sound--there's a very pleasant harshness there, if that makes any sense. Thanks for this.

CHeers man. The cymbols are a mix between a high passed noise oscillator and a reverb bounce of the beat itself. I've also used a 100% reverb of the vocal tracks to create paddy swells after the drop.

Argle: Yeah man! after 10 years of amateur music I'm still having a blast.

done! Mastered and ready to win the remix comp :) Big thank you to everyone who helped me with the critical feedback.

Loved it, and it is not even my kind of music! Well done!

It's a really good sounding remix. Best of luck on the contest. I don't know the original very well, so it's hard to make out exactly what was done here by you, but the results speak loud and clear here. Fat track.

Quite nice remix, but pretty simplistic. Adding more details to the beat and some more background leads and other stuff will help to do the track more fuller.

Thanks for the belated reply man. Trust me, the mix is sparse for a reason. Check out the original tune and other tunes by Claude Von Stroke to understand my minimal "focused" approach. Density does not equal quality :)

However, since I finished this tune I've realised the drums are a bit too loud. which is giving it a slightly empty feel.

Nice!
Very Moody. Interesting texture. You might consider creating a half dozen
different mixes and becoming a contributor at productiontrax.com. Free to do so. Maybe get some money and exposure. From what I've heard Hidden Base would fit right in. Good Luck!
