I've never tried with an MP3, but for wav files I usually just middlemize the window and drag them right onto a track. Otherwise, you can draw a new sequence and a small context menu pops up asking you if you'd like it to be an audio or MIDI sequence. Select audio, and browse to your desired file.

my imported file is playing back at the wrong speed
--never mind, had to change the mu sample rate to match my file. which makes me think mu cannot handle files of different sample rates.

It's better to match the audio files to the audio device!
Therefore make a copy of the audio file and resample that (using an external tool) to match the samplerate of the audio device.

That's not really defined by MU.LAB but rather by the sound device.
If you're on Windows, then goto MU.LAB -> Edit -> Audio Setup and you'll see the samplerate. On OSX, you can lookup the samplerate using the "Console" application as MU.LAB will write some basic info to the console each time the MU.LAB audio engine is (re)started.

Is it planned for this to be automatically handled internally by MuLab at any point? I've never had to manually resample a wav to use it in a host before. It's not really a big demand of the user but it is an unusual one, I think.
