OK guys, it's been a struggle to catch some time to do this, so sorry if some of the the comments are a bit brief

Bits n' Pieces - Yeager ... Good perc sounds for starters ... thick solid bass and good quality sounds all round, good varied composition and good production. love the 'munch' on the attack of a couple of those sounds.

Fast n' Slow - Yeager ... Nice creamy thump on the bottom end, lovely syrupy sounds, and again, good percs. Interesting and engaging composition .. and even a bit of Rolf on the wobbleboard!! Great track! Stunning even!

Flex n' Morph - V'ger ... Stunning! regardless of how I've chopped and changed the thrust of my voting criteria, this track has remained outstanding among a great collection. I love how the sounds are evolving constantly, and moving around boisterously, and yet a sense of free space remains. The percussion is well thought out and composed with as much attention as the rest of the mix. Also love the edge to some of the sounds and how they have been tamed in the mix rather than edited out. A dynamic and exciting track which has screamed for 10 points since I first heard it.

Flex n' Primative - AbstractCats ... Sparse but interesting track which retains a tension which lends power to the occasional 'fantasy organ' sound (..for want of a better description cos it's actually difficult to pin down between a blown or plucked/struck type instrument ) .Some of the sounds have a cool wood-to-plastic-to-glass shift, which is very much a character trait of FNS. play this one loud for best results!!

Flex n' Stars - AbstractCats ... Excellent intro for starters! All sounds have a cool assertive quality, some having a grainy edge ... not a bad composition, not the best, but there is no doubt that this is FNS4

Flex n' Dance - Totolitoto ... Stunning! Fluid sounds, good percs ... bit Kraftwerky, but that never harmed anyone in this comp.... and rightly so, ( and Kraftwerky in terms of their best stuff! ) Great use of what FNS does best. Would and should say more, but its hard to write while listening to this one.... but to say its gonna get at least 3 points perhaps says enough.

Flex n' Stains - K-Bee ... the 'fluffyness' of the bass and kick seems odd at first, and then it all falls into perspective! Nice sweeping pad, and a pleasing warmth all round. It feels too short ... which is a good thing bearing in mind it is 2 and a half mins!

Flex n' Steins Lab ... great glassy melody kick off with, really nice bass, cool hand drums, and that low growly sound, and then it changes again!!! and ...yeah! This one has grown on me lots!

Flexible Friends ... the simplicity of the intro is appealling, and the sounds are as I would expect from FNS ... particularly that 'meowing'! .... some nice chunky sounds in there. The progress of the track reads like a story ... I can almost see a cartoon adventure running alongside.. good use of stereo adds to this illusion of a series of events.... and nice to 'see' the clangers joining in!

Fnsintro - dwsel ... oooh that explosive sound! ... nice ... and the creepy bass! .... not bad at all for an intro! ... certainly good enough to make me wish there was more to come!

The Brightest Star - mac of BIOnight - Lovely lead! ... and modulated within an inch of its life to produce a range of sounds on its own from cats, elec guitar, Tuvan throat singing, and organ, great sounds all round, good production, and composition cool ... if a little too pentatonic ... lovely rich track.

Midnight Hatsize - jon boyd ... This track 'pounds'! ... great slippery lead sounds ... bass sounds perhaps a teensy bit on the heavy side, but hypnotic and engaging throughout!

The CheeseFlex - Mouxbar ... Whatever the vote, wins the prize for most Flex n' Steinish track! there's metal, wood, air, plastic, glass and stone and string in there ... and the composition has strains of early Public Image ... so there's a point for this one at least! ... which is not a lot, but more than 12 others will get!

The Conversation - Morflex ... Stunning! So atmospheric and dramatic! ... and gets second place for most FNSish sounding track! The percussion is great in that there is a good integrity between the sounds... and that steamy/detuned radio sound is well good! Good composition and production as well, but this track's points will come from the sounds used more than anything else with such a strong field.

Waltz - mrblitz000 ... Great sounds ... got that glass, metal, wood range covered ( with a hint of air! ), and cool melodic interplay! A few more sounds as good as these would have had this track knocking on the door for points!
An attention gripping wee track for sure with it's clever little runs!

Ahem... ( clears throat! )
So, I have to make a hard decision after having the pleasure of such a great collection of tracks .... and all the harder when I listen to some again and wonder if I've called it right ... especially when I compare any which have not made the top 5 and wonder 'How can there be a 10 point difference between that little beauty and any other track??' :cry: .... but thems the rools, and so .... before I think any more and turn the whole thing on it's head ...

10 points - Flex n' Morph
5 points - Flex n' Dance
3 points - The Conversation
2 points - Fast n' Slow
1 points - The CheeseFlex

Special mention for .... bloody well all of them! ... I'll shut up now, except propose that in future comps, the developer gets twice as many votes! :)

Post

Abstractcats, dwsel ... cheers for the votes and comments :)

Anyway, its taken me longer than I had time to spare on doing my votes, so I'll launch the next comp tomorrow ... and taken that the only negative comments re. 'rogue' are 'mono', 'no vol adsr' and 'hmmm' .... its gonna be a Rogue comp :hihi:

Anyway, we know that the following comp is gonna be Synth1 revisited, and after launching the 'rogue' comp, I'm gonna post up the gathered list of potential 'One-Synths' ..... so please, in your own time, suggest away re. future candidates and we'll get through them if we live long enough :hihi:

..... 6 days to go!!! :-o :-o :-o

Post

OK, 10 sets of votes in, and .... we have a problem! ( not you V'ger, I'm speaking on behalf of everyone else in the entire universe other than you ... ya bas**rd!!) ... oh, did I say problem? ...err .. I meant 'situation!' :lol:

1(1) Flex 'n Morph - V'ger ... 3, 10, 5, 10, 1, 10, 10 = 49
2(7) Flex-n-Dance - Totolitoto ... 5, 1, 1, 3, 3, 10, 5, 5 = 33
3(2) Bits 'n Pieces - Yeager ... 3, 10, 5, 5, 5 = 28
4(5) Flex-n-stramash - tattiemannie ... 10, 2, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3 = 24
5(3) Flexensteins Lab - Xenobioz ... 1, 10, 5, 5 = 21
6(4) Flexible Friends - WrigglerUk ... 10, 10 = 20
7(6) The Conversation - Morflex ... 5, 3, 2, 3, 2, 1, 3 = 19
8(9=) The Brightest Star - Mac of BIOnight ... 2, 2, 2 = 6
8(9=) Fast 'n Slow - Yeager ... 2, 2 = 4
10(8 ) The Flexorcist - tattiemannie ... 2, 1 = 3
11=(11) FnsIntro - dwsel ... 1
11=(12=) The Cheeseflex - Mouxbar ... 1
11=(12=) Midnight Hatsize - jon boyd ... 1
14=(12=) Waltz - mrblitz000
14=(12=) Flex N Primative - AbstractCats
14=(12=) Flex-N-Stains - K-Bee
14=(12=) Flex N Stars - AbstractCats

( Voters : 10, total votes : 210 )

... and that situation is that the only track boring in its non movement is 'Flex n' Morph' which further asserts its boringness by extending a lead as massive as not to have anyone close enough to care about ... let alone show concern for :hihi:
But enough about the leader, there's a real shake and shuffle going on several degrees south of that top spot! ... look at 'Flex n' Dance' go! .. a huge jump from 7th to 2nd!! ... but it's still tight all the way down to 7th place! ... and a real jossle going on in there!
... and yet, with a couple of good votes, and a lot of luck, anyone of those 14= vote virgins could be well in the mix! Still a long way to go, but the prizes, barring pass-ons will only go down to 6th place ... so there's gonna be some real wet, salty, lid-burning tears to come....

Keep those votes coming folks .... they all count, and they all add to the growing excitement! :)

Tattiemannie, it seems a bit lame that a great contest like this, with a large number of massively excellent entries, can only scrape up 10 voters from all of KVR!

The developers challenge rightly attracts lots of attention - what can we do to generate a similar level of interset in the OSC?

Perhaps the mods might create a DC like board for it, or highlight it some other way.

Just a thought.

Absolutely right! I think we should start a thread to collect ideas on how to spread this thing. Talking to the mods, as you suggest, is probably the first thing to do...

Thanks for the votes and comments guys! :) (despite the track having awful aliasing to the point of crackling due to encoding mp3 directly from 32 bits which I thought was a good idea, but obviously not..

Cheers for the votes Sans Nom :)

Yeah, it would be nice to get more votes, having said that though, we have only just come out of the festive season. I know I've not been able to make myself available as often as usual, so I suspect others will have been much the same. It may well be worth starting a thread to discuss how we up the profile of OSC, but I also wonder if this has any more value than keeping the current thread bumped. I dont know.
Yeah the quality and creativity that comes out of this comp is superb, but I suspect that listening to every track and voting is quite a committment for most... and more so for folks who are not involved, and are pushed for time to progress with their own musical projects.
Also, it appears to me that a lot of activity on KVR centres around news/releases/queries/updates re. commercial software, whereas we deal with freeware ... and very often, forgotten/overlooked/undervalued freeware .... so we will have limited appeal whatever we do ... personally, I dont mind that aspect, but as I said, it would be nice to collect more voters.

Perhaps the way forward is for entrants, as well as submitting their tracks and notes in the usual way, to prepare a 30 second clip of their track ... like the best 30 second section, or 30 secs which gives a feel of the track, whilst ensuring enough of the sounds are present, put these in a seperate folder, and somehow adding a voting option for folks who cant sit through an hour of material ... so those guys who know they wont be able to go with the 10,5,3,2,1 for whole tracks can maybe submit a 3,2,1 based on clips. If they have to submit votes in the same way ... ie in a single post, they wont be able to do both, as their name will be on the post(s) and will be easily spotted. Yeah, I see this adds a little complication, but also an element of ease which may attract folks.

But, carry on discussing ... it will at least keep the thread visible :)

Well I can say that when I first looked at these competitions, I found it was much more inviting when the entries were on BrainOvulation's page neatly listed and loaded in the player, and also when the link to that was easily found and the tracks properly named. 4shared.com doesn't always work 100% in all browsers and can be tricky to may be the cause of some disinterest.

But mainly like you said, this is a gear site and cheaper sounding and 'esoteric' freewares with minimal effects is maybe not everyone's cup of tea as the tracks can suffer to be honest, so maybe it would be an idea to upgrade the productions with more top shelf freesynths and be more lenient on effects etc in order to showcase more and get more people to join and also listen? For example, I think it knocked the socks of most when Kayoti did his thing in the Synth1 OSC: http://media.kaiyoti.com/play/synthesis ... Synth1.mp3 (although I don't think he used freeware reverbs?)

I'm not saying go the commercial route, but just think what would happen if f.i. Sylenth1 was the OSC.. :P

Post

Fair point V'ger, I find the 4shared playlist works better if I go via Internet Explorer rather than my ISP ... which is not ideal, and I was late getting in touch with Brain Ovulation .... and not heard back, so I assume he is otherwise engaged.

I could use another hosting site, although I find 4shared excellent for most things ... I suppose, if everyone is able to access the archived stuff as is, then I could find another host to do currently running comps, hopefully a host with a good playlist/play on demand feature ... and transfer the tracks to the 4shared account when the comps finish.... then, other than current comp links, all the other links on my recently compiled index could stay as they are.

Re. top shelf freesynths, and fx/production limitations/allowances, I think this is for OSCers and potential OSCers to decide .... There has been a good bit of discussion over time, and we are where we are by means of concensus... and I have to say, I like the aspect of inclusiveness and levelling that comes with keeping things free and fairly simple, and the limitations ensure that the results people get from a synth are less likely to be hidden by too many bells and whistles ... but thats me.
But if the mood of the users changes in a particular direction, I'm happy to go with the flow ... input is always welcome :)

I like the current OSC formula. Promoting free software is a good idea in my opinion. Personally I often don't see differences between freeware synths and effects and commercial (demo versions I've played with). Of course you can see much prettier interface, heavy bank of samples and presets, and might be (but does not have to be always true) more CPU optimized. The key thing for me is to perform the search to gather freebies and then to build a personal library of most useful, most stable and best sounding ones.

I can't blame software for lack of quality in my works, I can only blame myself. I might not remember these times before computers era, but I'm often referencing to the people who created big things these times with only fraction of technology available today. I've learnt and I'm still learning working under limitations in graphics side of my interests, and when I came here I saw that I can learn the same thing in music arranging and mixing area by participating in OSC's.

As for idea of cutting tracks to 30 seconds... I can only say that I'm enjoying listening to whole tracks :) What author or one listener might hear as 'the best 30 seconds of whole song' might not be that good part for another person ;)

Ok, I'm closing my mouth :ud:
May wiser people speak :tu:

Post

Cheers for the input dwsel :) ... just a wee defence of the 30 sec clip ... I did state that this would be in addition to the whole track .... Likewise I prefer to hear whole tracks, but I would like to think that someone who only has the time to listen and vote on clips, will enjoy some clips enough to make them want to hear a few whole tracks .... and perhaps better appreciate what folks are doing here ... and perhaps become more involved, where previously they may have felt it was too much of a leap/committment ... I dunno really, just an idea.

err.... 5 days left to vote!!!!

.... Errr, gonna leave off launching thr 'Rogue' comp 'til Friday .... I've decided to launch a prize appeal ....

Speaking of prizes, I believe there should be something in it for the voters, too - not very nice to say, I know, but that'd be the way to get more voters, as that's the way humans function...
