For sure you know about them already, but just to mention good replacements apart from Epicverb (which I still don't get the rave about, must give it another go) are Glaceverb, Reverberate LE, Omniverb and Freeverb among others.

Hey it's more than okay with me and I really hope it will be whitelisted so we can all use it, it's really that good.

Well, it's probably a good job I didn't go with my first plan and use the Aether demo, which still works though I've had for a couple of months; albeit after half an hour or so it locks on to the current preset.
Now that is a lovely reverb (nearly, but not quite, lovely enough for me to hand over the readies).

Cheers for the submission hakey
... whoah!! .. they're really piling up now
... I'll rename your file so no worries.
I couldn't say whether Ambience is freeware or not ... but if it has a donation button which doesn't work, then that seems to me to be more freeware than a freeware plug which has a 'feel free to donate' button you can feel free not to click! ... so I'm not gonna get in a spin about it.
However, I dont know what others think, but I feel strongly about the freeware only thing .... I think it's important to keep a level playing field and not have a situation where the production becomes more important than the capabilities and limitations, and raw character of the featured synth, and how folks use/overcome these in the writing of a track.
Call me paranoid if you like, but I dont want to head towards a situation where doing well in this comp comes down to how much we spent on production gear.
I also think there is more than enough decent quality freeware around, so it shouldn't be a huge hardship to anyone to hang with the freeware only rule .... in any case, when you submit your track, it's still yours, and you can remix at your leisure with your fave verb/comp/crusher etc.
I have less of a issue with the odd rebel pushing the boundaries re. type of fx and how much 'transformation' they will get away with .... at least there's a gamble in that most of the voters will know what they synth can/cant do, and the further they push their luck, the more likely their luck will be out
I will have a look at Ambience to see what its status is .. I am not gonna disqualify anyone ( this time!!
) ... at the end of the day the voting is the right/wrong reinforcer.

It might be brave, but as Synth1 has its own set of effects, you might forbid... er... discourage
using outside effects besides eq and compression

Yeah dwsel, challenge is challenge
... I do actually take account of the fx available within a synth when setting the rules .... and usually it makes it harder, cos if a synth has reverb, then reverb is not allowed as an effect ... even if the synths reverb is a bag of wet sh!t
I did once go with the idea that there was no point in limiting fx that the synth already had, and overuse of additional fx were only gonna needlessly eat up cpu .... but a number of OSCers disagreed, so I now feel that the general concensus is reflected in the rules at present ... but hey guys, speak up and discuss! .... I dont mind being the man in the middle who has to please everyone

Mea culpa!tattiemannie wrote:I have less of a issue with the odd rebel pushing the boundaries re. type of fx and how much 'transformation' they will get away with ....
I have perhaps been (ahem) a bit liberal with the eqing - cutting the bottom end out of the kicks and bass during the intro and breakdowns, which I did more for, what I'd say were, the requirements of track structure and a nod to the idioms/clichés of the genre (well that's my excuse).
But wait, I have another, far worse, confession - I've just been reading through the last OSC thread and discovered that sampling was "usually discouraged", or words to that effect - and I sampled my drums!
In my defense I would say that, other than eqing done at track level, the samples that I used were straight out of Rogue and were not transformed in any other way, so they haven't been distorted, stretched, pitch shifted, chorused, flanged, compressed etc.
I only did it for ease of use and, as the sounds were unadulterated Rogue, I thought it was still within the rules.
Oh well, I'll take my punishment - whatever that may be - like a something or other..
If it makes any difference I already own ACE, and Supercore wouldn't get enough use from me to justify accepting it (no offence Karma, but I've already got more than enough stuff to be playing with) and so, in the highly unlikely event of me being in the points (there are some seriously well produced tracks in here already!) I would certainly have handed any prize down the line.

I've used Ambiance and it does sound great, what I understand is that it is freeware but you can donate and get rid of the pop up, but other than the pop up there is nothing getting in the way of using it.tattiemannie wrote:

As for the freeware requirement, I think that is absolutely necessary, other wise it would be the same as the Comp which is held is held in the music cafe'.
I've never been the "if it aint' broke, dont fix it" type but in this case it is in great shape! Just my 2 U.S. cents = 0.0122189638 British pounds worth

hakey, from what you've written there, I dont see a problem .... EQing is basic, standard production. Sampling, if straight from the synth, and not pitch shifted/modulated after the event, is no different to recording and splicing/cutting and pasting a phrase.
I dont think we need to get too anal about these things. The aim of the comp is all about discovery and fun really, and enjoying what is possible from one synth whilst living with its drawbacks.... and producing a piece of music!
And thats why I think too many effects and too much emphasis on production kinda defeats the purpose.
I dont mind a little bit of a 'slight cheat' here and there, but I do believe that if you need to use commercial plugs to get what you want, then you are missing the point.
Personally I try to stick to the mda and the Kjaerhus plugs, keeping it simple so more effort has to be applied to making the synth do all the work in producing the sounds I want.... but each to their own ... within the rules of course, which are designed to reinforce the spirit of the comp

Yeah, I've certainly had a lot of fun doing this over the last week or so.

And once more the forum stopped notifying me of replies...
Anyway: unfortunately, from the look of things I won't be able to participate this time, but I'll obviusly vote when the time comes. And keep my energy for the next osc

My word and personal thing about demos. I treat them a bit like software for non commercial use. When I don't generate money with my work (author is not losing money he could possibly earn with plugin used in such project), I don't have this plugin in my 'main bag of plugins', I agree with limitations and popups then I don't feel in such a big duty to buy it, especially that I guess it would generate costs I could hardly afford
It would be not a big problem for me to switch to 'pure freeware' either for commercial use or OSC. As I see that you state it very strongly - freeware only I'm asking you for forgiveness
and I promise I'll check twice plugin status before I use demo in next OSCs
hakey:
I'd be rather against using formant filter on main lead than using Ambience reverb

Hmm ...maybe we should add some spice to the comp by introducing an optional negative vote for chancers
Shame you cant do a track Mac for this comp, but good luck with the next one
Xenobios, yeah ... go for it! By my reckoning you have about four and a half weeks to get a Synth1 track together
As for the March comp, I think we need to decide soon which synth we'll be using. I've been playing around with Photon2 recently ...... definitely one for the list!
Also, I've not heard anything further from Olikana re. the 'free choice' comp..... so unless Olikana still wants to run this one sooner, we could run it in March. I felt there was a good level of support for the idea so it would be a shame if it got buried.
