That's good news (and a partial relief) - thanks. So anyone can make documents that would be freely readable and easy to obtain direct to the iPad?unpeople wrote:Not so. Apple uses the open .epub format.headquest wrote:...and [e-books] would need to be in the Apple format to work with their reader.
What will the iPad do for musicians?

Some still survive but also have a keyboard :

In practice, it won't be that bad at all and I think it will fall into a range where there is balance between compromise, usability and functionality

It always amuses the hell out of me when people say shit like that. Make music on the go? Going where? What the f**k for?jones-y wrote:And by the way, My (and many others')intent with both my old palm and windows mobile devices was to make music on the go. So, relevant again...

Well if the ibooks store is anything like iTunes, independent writers and smaller publishers could sell their wares alongside the big boys...headquest wrote:That's good news (and a partial relief) - thanks. And you still have filesharing, so if for example, Apple makes the stupid move of blocking some book, all the writer has to do is offer it as a download in .epub format on his personal website, which you could then transfer to your iPad. Hypothetically... I'm sure iBooks will have a Mac/PC equivalent much like iTunes, which will allow you to manage the content on your iPad...

- I sometimes go on vacations or business trips. My ASR-10 doesn't fit into carry-on.
- I like to combat writers (producers/composers) block with a change of scenery from time to time.
Erm... its the same for any other type of portable electronics leveraged for any other purpose: Because the person is not at home or the office...
edit: Oh and its not about making a complete musical piece in 10 minutes... Its about idea generation, inspiration, and the ability to capture all that right here, right now.

You mean the Dell will run Logic, Final Cut Pro, Garageband and other "standard apps" many of us take for granted?UltraJv wrote:Or you could buy the Dell Tablet and get it all, multi touch, multi tasking, keyboard and it will run standard apps...
Sounds great
Peace,

god I hate apples marketing people and Jobs is one of them - the biggest manufacturer of hand held electronics - complete nonsense - their turnover has been bigger than Nokias in one quarter- the problem is nokias turnover includes almost nothing from itunes and computers, which lets face it are hardly handheld
If merely producing a handheld consumer device means you get to play this game go and look up Sony - and there sales dont even include those of Sony Ericcson
Now if jobs had said most profitable manufacturer of hand held electronics (because we treat you like suckers and over charge) I wouldn't disagree with him, even if he missed out the bit in brackets - but instead is more advertising bullshit

I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Yeah, a moving train full of people is the perfect environment to work on your next track...jones-y wrote:- I commute to work on the train. That's about 90 kid/wife/boss free minutes a day.
So do I. Not once have I felt a desperate urge to make music on a phone, an iMaxiPad, or any other silly new gadget some f**k-stick wants to sell me.jones-y wrote:- I sometimes go on vacations or business trips. My ASR-10 doesn't fit into carry-on.
For those who even get "writer's block", one of the best ways to cure it is to get away from music for a bit, take a little break from it all...not be wired into music 24/7.jones-y wrote:- I like to combat writers (producers/composers) block with a change of scenery from time to time.

Oh yes it will. I could run beatmaker, isyn or idrum on it right now today if I had one in my hands. and think of what the future will bring, in terms of apps leveraging that much screen space...Hovmod wrote:@ Jonesy: Yes. Well. Laptops work very well for that kind of thing NOW, and the paddy thing obviously won't.

You're forgetting that almost everything Apple sells is portable. Only the iMac, mac mini and mac pro aren't. And none of those are in their top sellers. I seriously doubt they're counting sales of anything other than portable electronics in that statement. But if it rubs you the wrong way, go find something to prove they are making false assertions...ericj23 wrote:god I hate apples marketing people and Jobs is one of them - the biggest manufacturer of hand held electronics - complete nonsense - their turnover has been bigger than Nokias in one quarter- the problem is nokias turnover includes almost nothing from itunes and computers, which lets face it are hardly handheld
