finally got too frustrated so had to ask
I open old projexts and I can't remember what patch I used. But Zebra is no help cuz when I open the gui all I see at the top is
Zebra 2.5
Registered to xxx
then I fumble around. you know what I mean so how do y'all deal with that?

Huh? Hmmm... weird... Zebra should definately display the patch name unless you edited it from scratch...
Or is that a bug? Can anyone confirm?

nope, no editing. it's always been like that for me. But like I said I finally got too frustrated
edit: I should have said this only happens in Reaper, where i have a lot of old stuff. lately I've been using Ableton for new projects and it doesn't happen there

Just tried to re-create in reaper. My preset name shows up after a save/close/open/load of the project RPP file.
You can also left-click in the name info box and a list of patches should show up with the patch loaded having a check-mark to the left of it:
Maybe that will get you the name of the preset you're searching for.

I had this sort of problem with an old version of Zebra (2.2 I think). That was very frustrating. But everything is working fine here with the lastest version in both Renoise and eXT2.
I'll install Reaper to make the test. Will only report back if I find the problem.

I've just checked several times in Reaper 3.22 (the latest version as I type this) and it happens every time here too. After a save/close/open/load of the project file, the preset name is gone as sinzero describes in the OP. No preset names are checked in the left-click drop-down either.

NB. Thought you might like to know that I discovered this after a bit of investigation:
In Reaper, go to Options>Preferences>Plugins>VST> and under VSTstate/UI, check "Save as bank". "Save full VST plug-in state (recommended)" should also be checked - but this one was already checked here by default.
That solved the problem here. Preset names are now displayed in Zebra on project close/re-open.

Badge, I checked my preferences and both of those settings were on for me. I don't reacall setting those manually. I doubt setting that will get sinzero's preset name back on his current save, but at least it will preserve the name going forward.

i have the same problem under brainspawn forte - preset is recalled on scene change but not the name of the preset. i will try to tweak some compatibility option that forte has and see if that helps.

Hmmm, interesting.
I once sussed out that hosts save banks with project rather than preset. Hence, if a bank is saved I add the preset name into the bank data, and when it's set, I also promote that name as the current preset name.
If a host sets a program rather than a bank, I expect the host to also set the program name.
