im new to this program, and i have a basic question. every time i load a preset, i have no idea how to clear the preset and start from scratch again. is there a "clear" button or something that im missing?

which instrument? Zebra? At any rate, on Zebra, if you click the Presets button at the top and look in the left window where you find the presets directory, you will see a directory at the top of the window named "Local". Click to highlight Local and look in the right window pane. Now click "initialize" patch (i believe it is at the bottom of the list) and this will reset or initialize the synth. I'm guessing that is what you needed.

You can also save your own initialize preset.
When you first start Zebra up, make the preset you want to have when you need to start from scratch, then save it as the preset you use to start over.
Then save as "initialize"

Yeah, very true (and helpful tip). I can say how I work. I of course creat my own folder within the Local directory (this is where I store MY patches). Upon creating the new folder and naming it what I want, I open and save the initialize patch from the Local directory into my own folder. This way it is faster to initialize from the folder I save into most often (my own).

One can edit the initialize patch, As MCnoone so kindly pointed out, and save it as one's own customised initialize patch. For example, if there are certain fx one would like to always be loaded into the fx grid...etc, etc. also OSC's and such. One can have several different types of initialization patches to start with. I only use the original one that came with ACE/Zebra for now. I am too lazy to customise my own set of start templates (or customised init patches)for now...or perhaps just a bit otherwise distracted.

thanks guys! yeah, i was using zebra. sorry.

one more tiny [useless] bit. if you wish the init patch you create to always show at the TOP of the patch list, instead of getting alphabetized along with the rest of the patches you create, then save it with a "!" in front of the name.
ex: "! initialize"

The main thing I change in the default preset for any u-he synth is to set the master transposition to 0 instead of -12 semitones.

Good idea. Yeah, I noticed that too. I have to wonder if whoever designed the synths liked a good bass sound. It is the same way in ACE. If I am making a pad, keys or lead I'll set it up to 0. For Basses I leave it where it is. I often end up playing them an octave down anyway.

I also noticed the main output gain in Zebra init patch defaults to around 40. I usually set that up, like ACE defaults, at about 12 o'clock when I start something. It doesn't make much difference but it can be good to hear what you are building sometimes without inc gain on the mixer, depending on how hard/soft the patch.

Yeah, master volume is a tricky one, depends a lot on whether you'll be playing single notes or chords...
