If I buy Zebra, do I really need ACE?

Define need please. Did you need Zebra? Do you need to even make music?

When i tried ACE demo, i found that i can modulate to very high frequencie range without crackling. The sound was clear. Zebra can't do this. And all others synths as well. Dunno about D-Cum though.

ACE shines in doing crazy things like LFOs that go well into the audible spectrum. This allows you to do things like Pulse Width Modulation but the LFO source is actually running at an audible frequency. The multiple modules in ACE are also incredibly unique. You can do RM and AM with them. You can also create feedback loops like an LFO modulation the VCF cutoff, taking the output of the VCF and setting it as the input to the S&H on the original LFO. All (but Ring Mod) are impossible to do in Zebra today. The filters also sound different to me than Zebra's. It's a very different beast and programming it feels very different too.
You should really use the demo for an extended period of time to get a feel for it. You may not like it or you may fall in love with it. Like Zebra, you'll only really appreciate it if you try to program a sound. Flipping presets doesn't do ACE justice at all.

Thanks for your analysis of pros/cons of each and how to approach.
I think extended use of demos is in order.
I do need to make music.
I need another synth like a hole in the head, but since I have the hole in my head, I guess I need another synth to fill up the space.

yes (assuming your cpu can handle it)Musical Gym wrote:If I buy Zebra, do I really need ACE?
ACE is not a subset of Zebra... It is an entirely unique synth and it has its own magic. The sound quality is phenomenal!
