Good stuff guys, yeah I agree Anubis has the capacity to produce some great sounds ... some good edgy stuff for sure!

Still having a prob getting my track finished tho .... familiarity with madtracker has trickled back, but it dawned on me a couple of days ago that the school holidays are about to catch me out again ... so I've had to put a lot of work into the soundtrack I'm doing .... I have 5 days to deliver the finished score :o :-o :-o ... So I'm gonna be a 'last minute larry' I'm afraid, still I like what I have so far ... worst case is I hurry an arrangement together of what I have, and it wont be at all bad :)

Anyway, I'll launch OSC15 prob 4th or 5th April, ...after I do the voting thread for this comp (1st April) .... are we about to return to the one vote poll :hihi:

Hey! .... I'm nearly finished my track!! :) :) .. and I have to say, in going into fellow sufferer mode .... ie. using Madtracker as my host, I've done Anubis a bit of an injustice really, .... but now I can hear Anubis without the distraction of raiding my old brainfiles about how MT works, it's a damned fine synth!!

The sounds are very much in keeping with what I used to use MT for, so its good to be up to speed with my old fave host, and enjoy the music rather than farting about with automation etc .... phew! :-o

Its late, so I'll give it a run through the proper speakers over the next couple of days, but .... finger crossed ... I think its all there! :)

Now, if we only could have one of those sissies out there come up with a few tracks, the competition would be a bit more lively  :P :hihi:

Thanks for the explanation and patches Hakey, I gave the track I started a go to see if I could scramble something together, and the crackle and crash thing was markedly reduced with deleted automation or modulation and no note overlaps but so was the juice from the sound and also V'ger..

About trackers, what's the thing with them? I wouldn't know where to start with one, looks so messy and unintuitive.

Yes, the filter problem particularly forces one into a less than ideal compromise - if juicy analog filter sweeps are your thing then you're going to be disappointed. That said, attempting to find interesting/useful sounds despite the limitations had me exploring avenues that I probably wouldn't have otherwise gone down - a good example of how limitation can be a spur to creativity, which is what is so interesting about these OSC's. :)

(And I'm just starting my track today, so mine's probably going to be cobbled together too ;) )

Trackers are easy to use if you like to program your songs I guess.
I haven't really tried sequencers that much to know if they would be easier to use.

Aegis Sonix, the first program I started with was note staff based, and with no midi recording (IIRC) or keyjazz (qwerty) recording. (but qwerty playing). And an excellent softsynth.
Then when I got to try my first tracker, I never used anything else. Though I missed the soft synth in Sonix

Now I use Jeskola Buzz (tracker). Which has everything I want. It also has a piano roll sequencer.

Trackers rule for those who don't know sh*t about music and notation (like me). But for those who does - they rule nonetheless :D Seriously, tracker-style notation was something I was searching for a long time. If only Aodix was developed further :( I liked its ability to put chords into just one channel and zooming was awesome too.
@Xenobioz: Hey, your track should be called Anubioz :D

Yeah
Actually I was considering to call it Xanubioz :hihi:

Hooray! my track is finished!! .... Unfortunately, it was impossible to finish in MT2 for 2 reasons ... it only saves to .wav, and the output ... if all instruments and master track are kept clear of the 'red zone', is a bit quiet ... the version of MT I have at the moment is a beta ... and there are known bugs ... some of which were not an issue in previous versions .... the metering appears to be one such bug.

So I had to resort to FL8 to convert the wav to mp3, and do the final maximisation .... but hey! ... it sounds good! ... if you like that kinda stuff! :hihi: ... just gonna upload :)

OK, thats my track uploaded :)

Essential automation in MT2

Yeah, i've got the same thing; rendering to .wav only. So, it's a choice between loading into Audacity, then making an MP3 (but it only appears to do 128kbps); or another option, which is to burn the .wav to CD, then rip a 192kbps .mp3 through windows media player.

yada yada

Post

I use Audacity to encode at 320kbps. Have you tried editing the preferences?

Wow .. that sounds complicated! ... have to say though, as well as appreciating/reappraising the beauty of FL, it has been a cool excercise working with MT2 again ... working purely with qwerty with no reference to a piano roll brought about a teensy bit of freedom of thought which would have gone further if I wasn't pressed for time as well as that time being sucked up via my unfamiliarity ( via neglect ) of MT. Would have been nice to fart around with control codes as well ... but hey! ... next comp? might do madtracker again :hihi:

It was particularly good to write the rhythmic pieces in a tracker ... the old mark space thing ... beat-space-space-space-beat-space-space-beat-beat thing where it feels like you are actually tapping out a beat in real time even though you are in step writing mode .. and the actual timing of the tapping is forgiven(ignored :hihi: )..

So ... 3 days to go!! ... and I also have 3 days to deliver that film soundtrack ... so pardon me if I am kinda 'missing' between now and the close, I'll still be keeping tabs, even if I dont post .... good luck with those tracks!!! :)

Oh, by the way ... I may well be wrong, but I think madtracker is now free! ... correct me if you will, but if it is free, and you like trackers, it's a bloody good piece of kit!

I can get encode higher in Audacity as well, i usually use 192 i think.

MrBlitz I listened to your "Touch Srey Nich" songs. My wife liked one of them (09-07-28 version)and said it sounded a bit like hip hop. (the production I guess).
Also once she listened at it there was this down sliding bass note that scared her because it sounded like a ghost. :hihi:

Yes tattie, getting the right timing thats in your head down by programming can be tricky indeed. At least if its a complex rhythm. I sometimes try to think of the empty spaces as hi-hats to help me know where I am. So I kind of think of the rhythm in slow motion and then input it at that speed with spaces as hi hats. But that doesn't work always either.

Xenobioz,
I really like that song, Jun Oun Tov Mae.

The track your wife liked best is the most mellow. The other versions are kind of 'heavy' in comparison. It all does have sort of a hip-hop feel, doesn't it? It's around 98 bpm.

The percussion on the original track is great, and the flute is really interesting. The bass is cool, too. The chords are fairly easy... more or less:

i i III i verse
iv i v i chorus

Going by the above; in certain parts, there appear to be some notes which occur 'outside the chord of the moment.' But that's my rough translation of the chords.

It's really fun to jam along to, and try and fit in with all of the other instruments.

Anyway, yada yada

Touch Sreynich is great.
