Songs in 5/4

I don't know any, except for Take Five, but that's more like 3/4 + 2/4.

Huh???? 3/4 + 2/4 = 5/4... besides the fact that the tune was written in 5/4, AFAIK.

3/4 + 2/4 to me would mean measure of 3/4, then measure of 2/4, then measure of 3/4, then measure of 2/4, etc... I don't think Take Five was written that way, though I don't have the original sheet music so who knows... If you're counting 5 or 7 or 9 or whatever then you should count 5 or 7 or 9 or whatever, and not break it down into groups of this and that.

I was just trying to sound more intelligent by quoting my rhythm teacher and Wikipedia (The jazz composition "Take Five", written in 5/4 time (or more correctly 3+2/4)). I don't really know why he says this but when he does his 5/4 demonstration, it is certainly a different dynamic than Take Five.

First song in 5/4 that comes to my mind: Mission Impossible theme. The second is Erotomania (by Dream Theater), but there are more time signature changes in that song.

some 5/4 songs manage to hide the odd rhythm quite well, like the one from Jesus Christ Superstar mentioned. This one accentuates it (once it gets going)



and there's even sweet folky songs in 5/4

A lot of songs by Tool. Couldn't tell you which ones. Most of their rhythms are pretty weird. Honestly I never really count it out. They run circles around me with that stuff. They're always an intersting study in time sigs, accents and rhythms.

i remember hearing an interview with ian anderson concerning "living in the past" and apparently the record company wanted a danceable single to release so he wrote something in 5/4 and stated it's easy to dance to if you have 2 1/2 legs.

If I recall, it was the band Limp Bizkit that covered that song and if I'm not mistaken, I believe their lead singer, Fred Durst, had problems counting to five, so...

Can't recall who did it, but there is a cover of Take 5 that came out recently that I also believe was squashed into 4/4 - it's a jazz-lite with a hip hop backing track. I recall actually liking it, but it was certainly a different vibe from the original.

Re: Tull's Living in the Past: The one 5/4 pop song I always think of for odd meter. That, and of course, Pink Floyd's Time which is in 7/8 (or 3+4/4 as some here would say)... Never heard the one about 2 1/2 legs, though that sounds like classic Ian Anderson.

Wasn't the 1st Mission Impossible movie theme done by Tommy Lee? I actually like that version--can't recall if it's 4/4 or not though.
